I had cortisone injections twice. It really did not cure it. An orthopedic nurse gave me the best cure: scotch on the rocks to ease the pain and rest the glass on the problem area. So ice, pain killer and rest works! If you take a regular pain killer, your brain says it is ok but your muscle says no. Alcohol is a muscle relaxant. It worked twice on the elbow and works on the back pain (it just takes more scotch for the back)

Cortizone will only kill the pain it will not help to heal in the slightest and you will do more damage than good.

It could well be related as it could be stress/trauma related to the recoil.

Heavy recoil tends to aggrevate the tendons that's why I shoot a heavy gun with a soft 24gm load or an auto. The easy solution is to fit the Isis unit and not to shoot too often.

All the US pistol shooters seem to rave about cortizone injections for it.

Got me thinking Mike, This has been going on for about 3 months now, about the same amount of time ago that I broke my stock with a danuser recoil reducer on and  put a normal stock on it. Seems like too much of a coincidence to dismiss. Maybe the root cause is recoil not an over tight grip.

I might try shooting some 21 grammers for a while along with support and if it feels better think about an Isis on the back end again.
Or fit an Isis recoil system. Works better than a Danuser I hear and the gun weight stays the same..

Thats what I heard too Will ;)  I will try the 21g route and strapping it with a visit to the docs thrown in for good measure.

Wouldnt mind having a couple of shots with yours sometime Will if we are at the same ground, never know Westy might get his wish and I get bitten by a proper Italian gun

Try MY proper Italian gun, Fuz!  Single piece action, beautifully balanced, hardly any recoil.  And of course, I'm only a smidge bigger than you...!  :p

Hi Fuz

I'll probably get a few bricks hurled in my direction after this, but I do know a number of golfers who have been seriously affected with this problem, and all of those that have tried it have claimed enormous success from a series of acupuncture sessions.

Don't knock it 'till you've tried it I say !

yeah and with that new stock of yours I'm looking up the rib with my left eye off the right shoulder :)  Maybe I should start shooting off the left after this afternoons display munching that raff pair of loopers lefthanded  ;)

Look for an epicodilitis strap, i used to have the same issue, they work by isolating the tendon that is inflamed so you use different musculature to use the arm, this in turn allows the problem to heal, it worked really well for me.

Fuz,

Have managed to acquire a tennis elbow type injury in both elbows over the past few years, both happily now cleared up, however at one stage so chronic in my right arm that I couldn't open the screw top cap on a soft drink bottle. In both cases, it was caused by working the arm under load with the elbow joint in a bent position. As has been previously mentioned, its an inflammation pressing on a nerve that causes the pain. The only effective long term cure is rest, assisted by the use of anti inflammatories, ice to ease the swelling in the very early stages, followed by alternate hot and cold treatment (ice/hot water bottle) after a few days and any one of the various forearm 'band' type supports, which alleviate the pain by applying pressure in one area to lift the nerve away from the inflammation (or vice versa, sorry a bit rusty). I found that once I had the injury, the neoprene sports supports made matters worse, due to the fact that they applied pressure to the whole area. However they do assist in prevention.

Must confess that I have found cortisone injections to hurt like hell, felt like I was being injected with a needle the size of a McDonald's straw!!!

Hope that assists,

S

Totally welcome mate.

Yes, I've had it, I think tennis elbow is on the outside of the joint but shooters elbow is on the inside, I tried various supports but it does seam that rest and strengthening without support is best long term. I also got the Carpal tunnel thing in left wrist and had to use left hand a lot less for everything it is related to thumb flexing and gripping.

My injection's didn't hurt, but about 20 min's later my arm ached a bit

Fuz,

You saw the 'Twonk' a couple of months ago! Okay 'Twonk' I saw you two months ago and I have rested it and it's no better, so can I have a second opinion please  and can we get it sorted. Because loads of my friends on shootclay have suggested it is this and that  and none of them are doctors.

I need to get this fixed soon Doc, otherwise Salopian will just keep banging on about getting it sorted, it's bad enough having a sore arm, I don't want a pain in the arse as well.

Almost the same as not many of us on here are shooting instructors but we still give advice !!!!!!!!!!!

Fuz didn't actually ask for a consultation, he asked if anyone else had suffered the same symptoms !!!!!

The only problem is the nut that's connected to the gun whilst shooting ! :)

Fuz.

I had the same problem Back in 2000 ,cortisone jabs worked for a short while, and I can recomend single malt as a temporary cure to all your ills. But if you want a permanant fix then surgery is your only option.

I am now the proud owner of a 2.5 in scar on the inside of my right elbow, I had to stop shooting for 6 to 8 weeks to give it chance to heal, ever since I've had no problems.

6 years later my left elbow went the same, did'nt mess around this time,Had the doc refer me to a specialist, same result. best thing I ever done.

Anyway once you've been under the knife think of all the TLC you'll get from Mrs Fuz

I doubt if your youthful doctor is any more of a twonk than most other GPs. Very few of them have the capability or the time to manage any type of medical issue that can't be quickly "solved" with a prescription and if you badger the doc enough you'll probably get Steroids and physio before getting a referral. In any case the answer to these types of inflammatory conditions is not Steroids, it's not NSAIDs and it's not cortisone, because all any of them do is treat the symptoms rather than the problem.

Ultimately you can only sort this by finding out what's causing it and figuring out both treatment and a work around. IMO the best way to deal with this is almost certainly to see a sports injury specialist. They are trained to deal with this stuff and are far more up to date with the latest techniques and equipment than your everyday clinician.

You can make it better by slight tweaks to your form; I had issues with something that had been started in the gym and was getting aggrevated by shooting. Saw an sports injury doc who helped with what I should and shouldnt do, rested a bit, had a support on my elbow and coupled with adjusting my shooting routine have never had any problems since.

Thing is, it is all very personal and the only way tobe sure is to see a specialist and take it fromt there.

Good luck!
