Can't help you on the clay front as I haven't been shooting that long,but on the target shooting front,most of the 10m rifle shooters I know suffer from some form of lower back problem,probably caused by the stress put on it by the stance position and weight of the rifle,completely agree with Nicola on the need for good core strength in that respect.

I mainly shoot air pistol,and last year had a shoulder impingement,which inflamed the tendons,causing my shoulder to lock as I raised the pistol,I worked with a sports physio on exercises to improve this based on the motions gone through to shoot,it took a few months,but in the end worked really well,and have not had any recurring problems.

For target shooting you have to develop and tone specific slow twitch muscles,and there are some specific exercises that are very beneficial,if you can get a copy of the last NSRA magazine there is a very good article on this,if not I am happy to photocopy and post you a copy.

It amazes me that anyone can pretend to have "secret" training methods and that anyone would believe that they did.  The coaches' drug of choice may be a good secret but the physical conditioning is pretty much TabA/SlotB stuff.  Physical culturalists for the last twenty centuries plus have done and do pretty much the same thing.  What has improved is treatment for those who ignore the established guidelines.  There is a wealth of info available for rotator cuff and back injuries.  If you have an injury see a specialist for proper advice, not your shootin' bud.  You can't overcome a gross genetic liability, but you certainly can optimize what you have.

Here's a simple conditioning program whose basic elements have probably been in use for a century or so.  No secret and it's free.  No age limits.

You are free to  add reps at your discretion. Less can be more.  Just 'cuz you could do 3 pushups 20 yrs ago doesn't mean you can start at that level now.  Part of this endeavor is exercising your brain as well.

Shooting shotguns is not like pistol/rifle and is pretty much a fast twitch anaerobic activity - BUT a solid aerobic base is really necessary to let that anaerobic base recover between shots.

Deltoid muscle strains can be a pain (no pun intended) you can obviously pick one up doing many things and my guess is that it wasn't shooting that caused it, Deltiods are split into three heads and it could be anyone of the three causing pain, and usually more painfull when your arms are raised more so with the humerus coming up shoulder level. Having spent twenty years or more as a bodybuilder (packed in now) i suffered my fair share of deltoid strains and can only say they can take weeks months and even years to ease my advice would be to gently warm up shoulder muscles for five mins before shooting and raise the gun as slowly poss and eventually it will go but oddly enough you can suffer for so long that when the pain goes you don't even realise. :fan:
 
 

 

 
 
I think there's a bit more to it than that, I suspect it lot to do with how recoil is dissipated into and through different physiques, how much they grip the gun and where and whether for instance they instinctively lean into the shot or not. Big is good if it can take all the recoil without reaching that individuals threshold, I have an unproven theory that recoil can be absorbed into a big heavy shoulder whereas it pushes a lighter one away and since the shoulder is attached to the rest of the frame, then the whole frame is riding the recoil, another day may have had me put it into words more coherently.
I have to agree with you on this.i'am 5.7" and 10 stone and have never suffered with recoil problems. and I know several much larger shooters who have a lot trouble with it
 
Everyone suffers recoil even if they do not feel it.......fact.

O/k I've never had any symptoms of recoil problems.
Yet.....!

I used to say the exact same thing....and i shot 36grms for donkeys years. 

I still shoot 36grms.....but the Isis green pad has taken all the recoil now. 

I just tried their new version of the green pad on the last two days....and it is marvellous. Even better with the new secret material. I shot 6 rounds of OT yesterday and today I had 67 helice and 4 rounds of OT......and feel fresh as a daisy.....ending on a 23 for the last round. It is a cracker and better than the green one i took off.

Do yourselves a favour peeps......think about minimising your recoil whether you feel it or not......true story.

 
For those of us of a certain age with a previous active sporting and part manual work past how do you differentiate between a "new" injury or an aggravated old injury? Also as seen at many a ground we are all different shapes sizes and lifestyles which would also affect injury possibility.

 
We all pick up injuries whether in sport or out.......the secret is to minimise any future possible injuries...and by that I mean recoil injuries if you are a shooter. 

If you pick up an injury then get the proper advice as to its recovery.

But if you can minimise the potential injuries, especially for new or young shooters...then the sensible ones do it....by warm up exercises and good recoil pads.

the best way to differentiate is to come and see a physio.... :biggrin:

Common injuries amongst shooters will be 'wear and tear' and repetitive ones, usually slow onset gradually getting worse.....this may happen at a younger age if you have a manual job andor played a lot of other sports previously particularly contact sports...
