Looking for something a little more suited to shoots grounds ( Southdown track for example ) I've been perusing the pages of Autotrader looking for a late model Mercedes Ml 320. Something I can use that won't cost £1500 every time there's a pot hole in a Sussex road ( so 17" rims and nice beefy all-terrain, high profile tyres )  I'll keep the blue monster for summer and the dry weather.

I have now had 2 serious attempts by rip-off merchants trying to separate significant wedges of cash from my wallet and several attempts to wheedle lesser sums.

Both went along similar lines.

Attempted contact via Autotrader anonymised telephone number) . No answer to call ( made from mobile phone ) but within an hour of that call get a text message back with email contact details. ( other party obviously 1571'd to get my number.)

The first one said she was deaf so couldn't use phone calls. ( I do know that a lot of deaf people now use either a speech-to-text convertor or a 'middleman' interface where someone does  translations to a text display ) the email address 'she' was using is [email protected]

A couple of emails and I was told that the seller was currently out of the country and  I was directed to a website purporting to be from a specialist car transport company. http://www.td-distribution-motors-ltd.co.uk/ which looks like a legitimate company until you start investigating their site, ( tracking service doesn't work, site only registered a few days ago, several 'odd bits about it )

The deal is supposed to be that you deposit money in escrow, they deliver that car and you get 10 days to decide on the deal at which point they release the money to the seller.

Now I know I may look like a mug but you'd be a fool to believe that I am that f....g dumb!

I dropped it like a hot potato and contacted Autotrader. We exchanged a few emails and they got back to me saying they had pulled more than 20 adverts placed by the same person.

Just today I had a very similar scenario start to unroll with a supposed independent middle man involved. Bugger another scam deal.

I have my suspicions of where the money might have ended up in both cases, suffice to say the middle east would be a good guess.

Last week I said yes to a local deal and arranged to finalise on Sunday. Sunday morning phoned up the vendor and she said the vehicle had been sold by her partner. ( No I hadn't given her a deposit thankfully but we had shaken hands on the deal , stupid cow! )

On Sunday I drove 70 miles to look at another vehicle. Lovely set of photographs from a vendor with street frontage and a decent showroom. Get there and it turns out that the photo's were quite skilfully taken to hide grubby carpets and there was no mention of the Engine Management light that was glaring on the dash. ( I carry a bluetooth diagnostic reader in my car, plugged it in and downloaded a litany of fault codes - looked like the mass airflow meter and perhaps one Oxygen sensor were on the fritz, oh and the last service had certainly not been done at a Merc dealer as hinted to by the service book.  :)  )

Now for the latest one.

Car near Heathrow, excellent set of photos again, supposedly private sale. made an 'offer' through the website of 20% below the asking price which was accepted almost immediately ( red flag #1 )

I have no doubt that a meeting in some quiet car park somewhere will be arranged at which point I will probably be the target of a mugging ( in the hope that I am stupid enough to pitch up with £10k in cash )

Would it be prudent of me to ask say 20 of my fellow forum members to accompany me to said car park? Should they wish to bring their favourite gun along so that we can discuss the finer points of ribs, cast, trigger action and chokes while we wait I would have no objection!  :)

I haven't had a response to my email about how they expect the 'deal' to be done yet, I'll let you know!

Be warned there are a lot of scams about these days. Be very, very careful.

PS: anyone got a ML 320 oil burner they want to sell me? :)

<edit> oohh just had a thought. Could arrange to meet at west london shooting school or AC sporting targets then I could legally have my gun handy! :)  )

What I can't understand is they have to pay to place ads on Autotrader so when you have 20 ads pulled it means they've actually lost a good deal of money and the ip address would also get flagged and banned ! I also don't understand why so many fall for some of these scams which are really quite amateurish.

Las month I sold a piano on ebay, the buyer immediately transferred a large sum into my Paypal but I found out that despite having bought thousands of pounds worth of goods via Paypal because I had only ever sold one or two things, that they considered me a potential risk  ;)  so wanted to hold onto the money for 4/5 weeks just to be sure (earning interest). I e-mailed the buyer who contacted them with no success and said they can't cancel payment to me and after reading up the terms and conditions and finding it hugely stacked against the seller I refunded the money back to the buyer and said she was welcome to collect and pay by bank transfer or cash (which also saves a rather absurdly large sum of commission to Paypal.)

The buyer agreed and almost immediately paid me the money into my bank account once the refund showed up her end, that's right, I'm thinking what you're thinking ! How easy it would have been for me to pull this scam on purpose. The piano got collected by two blokes on a van equipped with a fork lift but despite having warned them to call me and wait for me to guide them into the awkward drive the driver drove his ruddy van onto my nogo gravel    I gave them such a mouthful I felt bad myself.

V6 Merc diesel is rubbish. Oxy sensors going all the time 3 x £500. Glo plugs have to be hydraulically ripped out of the cyl heads then helicoiled back in. Turbo and electronic actuator fills with oil £3500.00 common. Juicy. Other sensors going all the time. Every visit to Merc at least £500. Management light on frequently yet nothing wrong £75 to turn it of at Merc.

Im at Heathrow if you need a body guard.

NIMBUSGB ,you lived in SA, so you should know the ropes !  yes you are correct in what you say,Hamster is spot on too, i have been caught a few times for small items on fleebay, because of fly by night sellers though,,did get money back, paypal and ebay will keep the cash for 3weeks or so, in case the seller messes you about, the motor trade scammers are not too clever usually, but can be so dishonest, especially with regards to history's and condition, etc, dont buy a car from up north at a bargain price either,,, probably been for a swim up there! hehe,,,,,,

as the saying goes, buyer beware,,,,,

On the question of Ebay can anyone give me a tel number to actually speak to a person.  Opened a resolution thing,  seller not interested so need to take it further but seem to have trouble with the online thing and I cannot find a tel number.

If you follow through the resolution centre you'll need to log in and then be given option 2 as contact by phone which I think is a live link. Ebay are pretty good at resolutions and will take non action by the seller as grounds to rule in your favour.

Took #1 son along as body guard. ( yeah right, he spent most of the day watching a movie on his phone! ) Came home with car. The guy was surprisingly relaxed about money etc. We ended up in Wembley high street Natwest. Got a cup of coffee and use of one of their consulting booths. We signed all the paperwork, I saw the blokes passport and driving licence and we are on their internal cctv I suppose! Transferred money to his account registered the car online, paid tax, pushed the button on insurance and drove off happy.

The £75 to reset the dash lights is only required if you don't have access to a Mercedes star diagnostics setup. Takes seconds and always useful for diagnosing stuff if you have a problem. :)  Steer clear of Mercedes stealers generally!

As for O2 sensors, I have a sensor spanner and I've changed a couple on older mercs, aftermarket parts save a fortune! ( £35 each )

What worries me is the conductor plate in the gearbox, that seal on the turbo inlet that leaks into the harness and water ingress into the rear SAM unit  . There is a fix for the seal I am told so will look into replacing that preemptively. Not much can be done about the conductor plate in the 7g gearboxs but ( touch wood ) this box is lovely and smooth. the rear SAM is not overly expensive to fix and fortunately does not need programming but it's a real pain to do.
