I don't know for sure but I would bet a lot of money that Mr Bob Braithwaite Olympic gold medal winner OT in 1968 never had any psychological coaching. Neither I strongly suspect did Mr John Stafford many times DTL champion world european etc etc etc. I could name many other very very top trap shooters that are still shooting that have not. So as Hammy says it is possible to do it without and it has been done many times. I suspect it will not be done that way again because now it has become an acceptable and neccasary part of all sports.

Wasn't it John who never winced when he missed???

All good shots use the mental side....whether they know it ....or we're taught it.....true story..!

Absolutely right Nic. If you watched his face and not his target you would have no idea if he hit it or not, it was of course very rare that he did miss. He had such a strong mentalality he was in fact part man part machine I believe. I have known John for many years and I have never heard him mention having had any coaching of any sort from anyone other than his Dad. I have to admit that I haven't asked the question outright but I am having a fairly good guess.

Some people can naturally apply the mental game.....some people need guidance with it....BUT....all winners use it in one form or another.....true story..!

I know a fair few very good shots who do use it but keep it quiet, which is their perogative. Braithwaite (sp?) no doubt would not have used any mental coaching, purely due to it not being available. In the same way lots of people have won the British Open wih a 6lb side by side, it was what they had available at the time. You could do it now (technically) but who would want to? You use the means available to you at the time to help to try and achieve your goals.

It is not vital, but it will help shorten your learning curve and help you control yourself a lot better when it matters. If you have access to a tool to improve performance, why not use it?

Absolutely agree with that Nic.

This is my point Ed, now that it is acknowledged and available "self taught" and or "naturaly good shots" will be a thing of the past. Sports psycology is here to stay that's for sure.

Ed the mental game has always been around in one form or another ever since the creation of 'sport shooting' in the old live pigeon days......it is just more obvious now.

A lot of it came naturally from father to son, or gamekeeper to sons of landed gentry ...etc...through the etiquette taught through generations. It is not a new thing....however it has been refined and people started specialising in it....made more public now through mass access with the Internet.

Vygotsky (1920's)

Luchins (1959)

Groot (1965)

Booth (1978)

Bloom (1982)

The mental game has been applied to many things from music, chess, behaviour, sport, memory skills.....etc etc

It is not new....it is just new to some people

What frankly surprises me looking at the likes of BH and in a smaller way EdS, is that there aren't legions of specialist personal trainers who have tailored specific body beautiful routines to suit Fitasc and ESP. Isn't it plainly obvious why these toned peeps shoot so well ? If you don't have their physique and fitness you've next to chance. Enrol with HamsterMuscle Outlaw XXX classes from only £200 per sesh and Ripple the rewards immediately. :asciidity:

What day might you be doing sir? :training:

Sorry just seen the thread 22nd June, working the Saturday as usual but will hopefully see you at a shoot soon.

Wayne, how do you feel about being in a calendar? For charity. Trousers are allowed, it's not the WI calendar.
