Another one bites the dust - well only a little bit

I understand from their recent newsletter that Purbeck Shooting School have stopped doing their monthly Registered English Sporting. As I see it that means the only registered shooting in Dorset is their FITASC. Dam' shame.

    Thank you, Mr Blaser....

....for the early Christmas present which arrived today. The 323 page sumptuously photographed catalogue of the Blaser 2018 range of products will give me hours of enjoyment. It must have cost a fortune to put together, print and despatch, and I very much appreciate it. Thanks again Charles

    Definition of "Straw Baler

I'm uncertain how the term "Straw Baler" is defined. Are we simply talking about a shoot which is not CPSA registered? Or a local outfit that decides to have a one-off clay shoot for charity? Or something in between?

    Subsonic?

I would like to ask those with experience of using subsonic cartridges about their experiences. Looking at the claimed muzzle velocity of the cartridges on Just Cartridges' website it becomes rapidly apparent that a subsonic cartridge's pellets are travelling rather slower straight out of the...

    "Pair lost"?

What's the general feeling here about the ref calling out the score as in "Pair killed" or "Pair lost" as you shoot? Personally I like to hear what he or she thinks happened; sometimes because I know it was only a tiny chip, sometimes because I genuinely don't know if I missed the target. But...

    Those pesky rabbits

When shooting rabbit targets in local competitions they are frequently set up in such a manner that they leap into the air as they encounter rubber mat or some such with a crease or bump in it. This bump is often missed by the rabbit, which carries on in a flat run across the ground. Given the...

    Dorset Police Certificate Renewal

Jolly well done Dorset Police Firearms Licensing Team, and thank you for my super-fast renewal, which arrived in the post yesterday. Super efficient, as well as super helpful, cheerful, and polite.  Other Forces take note - that is how it can, and should, be done!

    The invisible ones

Went off to Three Lion yesterday, and as ever had a good morning. In fact I went round again, and discovered that one target on Stand 1 had changed. Not in speed or direction or behaviour, but in appearance. The sun had, of course, moved round, and what was a perfectly obvious black round clay...

Prince Albert shooting from the hip...

I've asked over on PW and got nowhere... A recent episode of "Victoria", the costume drama featuring the life of the young queen, shows Prince Albert at a driven game day. He was depicted shooting from the hip, both standing and kneeling. He was bringing the birds dow, too. Is there anyt...

    A Question of Balance

I've recently been playing with the balance weights in the stock of my F3. Straight out of the box the gun balances a tad forward of the hinge pin, and I've decided that I would like it a bit further back. The weights - there are two - sit on a threaded stock bolt and once positioned, they are...

Thought I'd have a go at FITASC...

On Wednesday I attempted the FITASC at Purbeck. It all came as a bit of a culture shock. Every now and then there's a "Farmers' FITASC" held sometimes at Purbeck, sometimes elsewhere, which I thought might be a gentle introduction to a different form of clay shooting. So I entered this week's...

A sudden unwanted dip in performance

Oh dear. Just when it was going so well. I knew that changing guns wasn't going to suddenly propel me into the stratosphere, I'm much too old to believe you can Buy a Stairway to Heaven. I expected a bit of a blip as I became accustomed to my new toy, and I was massively surprised when on its...

    Barrel length

I'm homing in on my choice of sporter. I'm now wrestling with the question of barrel length. I'm told that the vast majority of buyers these days go for 32" barrels. For the last few decades I have shot with shorter ones - 30 or 28. I'm damned if I can decide - so what does the panel think?

    Pilford tomorrow Feb 13th cancelled...

Due to general sogginess. A great shame - I was looking forward to it.

Quality used guns- recommendations in the South West?

I'm starting to shop around for a Sporter. Although I'm only just starting that particular journey I've narrowed it down to a choice of a few - and some are used versions of more expensive guns. I'm aware that with a used gun there are traders who will stoop very low (bitzas, walloping the lump...

    Olympic Blue fizzle/pop

Today I had an Eley Olympic Blue go Fffft on me. No sign of shot or anything, no wad left in the barrel. I can only assume the primer was sufficient to expel the wad s and shot. This is only a couple of weeks after a Sportsman Gun Centre Super Smoker did the same to my mate, but with him there...

    High Combs

Can anyone tell me which of the major manufacturers's Sporters have higher than average combs? Whenever I pick a gun from a rack it always feels as though just another few millimetres would make all the difference.

Damp squib leaves hard wad in barrel...

Out at Purbeck this morning, having a pleasant practice round, enjoying some new targets, and my chum is in the stand. He's using fibre wads. More like a "FSSST" than a "bang", and we could see the wad and shot emerge from the muzzle. Naturally the clay remained intact. After a decent interval...

The Etiquette when there's a queue

I'm wondering if there's a sort of "gentleman's agreement" in force regarding practice days at clay grounds. Patience is indeed a virtue, and it's easy to be patient if a group of people reach a stand before you and proceed to shoot their turn. Not a problem, of course, it's the same as golf...
