As many will recognise it's a punt gun, made in the 1860s, effectively a duck cannon. Loaded from the muzzle with a couple of pounds [about 900gm of shot]. When you've loaded one barrel the tricky bit is to stand in front and load the other.

What some might not know is that the technique to maximise your harvest (for that is the best description of it) was to have both triggers attached together so both barrels fired at once. Sneak up to a huge raft of ducks or geese by using two small hand paddles in your punt, raise a hand or wave your hat to cause the ducks to lift, and fire immediately. They all tended to shoot high for obvious reasons, and this resulted in the maximum amount of birds in the pattern, 60 to 100 yards being about right for most punt guns.

I can't remember the figures quoted as the maximum killed through one discharge, but it would be a good day at the market if things went well. Normally too, a couple of other team members in seperate boats would come in after the shot, armed with normal shotguns to act as "cripple stoppers" and pickers up.

Any issf rule that says you can't use one for ot, that would be great.

I've read a fair bit about these but oddly enough never ever seen any old footage of them being used as intended.

There is a fabulous long thread about a guy who designed and built his own punt and then went on to make his own punt gun on pigeon watch with loads of photos and videos.  A cracking engineer and a great read!

Bit of muzzle flip as well. Might benefit from some barrel porting?

Not much meat left on the ducks either

Yes DT second barrel target acquisition could prove problematic

From memory, the record bag from one shot is in the region of 300 duck......

Witnessed one being fired today.http://www.shootclayforum.com/uploads/monthly_12_2014/post-230-0-05477600-1419380736.jpghttp://www.shootclayforum.com/uploads/monthly_12_2014/post-230-0-07806400-1419381591.jpg
