New gun - but neck ache after shooting

Having had the same problem some time ago I can make some suggestions. Firstly gunfit. It is essential to get someone you trust to check gunfit and make changes if necessary. Next I would advise getting a good coach to look at your stance against the fit of your gun. After much research I...

    Consistency

It is impossible to know what goes on in the head of a top shooter just before a target unless they tell you . As well as a pre-shot routine most would say it is important to get all the information possible on the clays to be shot before calling pull. An old faithful was to to try and see the...

SGC arrived and a Miroku Reserved

You need to know the choke for each barrel on this gun before you buy. You can easily open out a choke but reducing the amount of choke can be expensive. I suggest you get the comb height checked as well. The gun needs to shoot where you are looking. You can argue whether you need 50% or 60% or...

    getting out and about

Don't forget Kibworth . Friendly ground providing good range of targets that can all be hit most of the time by most people!

    Hit some and missed some?

There is a case for delaying having a gun fitted until you have more experience. A full fitting requires you to have perfected your mount so that the gun fitter has a stable platform to modify. For a beginner, many believe that once the length of pull (but to trigger distance) has been altered ...

    Hit some and missed some?

Try not to overthink what you are doing on the stand . To shoot well you will need to learn all the basic skills that go into shooting . A good coach is the first place to start. As the gun has to shoot where you are looking and you need to get used to the characteristic of the gun you shoot ...

    How do you 'reset'?

Sometimes you just have to keep going until it comes good.

    Shotgun shot Trajectory

Most coaches would suggest that it is not so much where you miss as why that is important. I would always recommend a beginner to start with some coaching so that their shooting career gets off to a good start . Once bad habits are picked up they can be difficult to change.

Nimbusgb ,I am intrigued to learn how, as a new shooter, you know where you are missing the clay?

Ear Protection for people wearing glasses

I wear glasses and have no trouble with standard headphone type cans. As for in ear protection, as long as the ear plug is moulded to the shape of your ear they should be effective.

    pushing through.

It may also be worth asking yourself after each shot " What did I see , was it the clay breaking or the end of the barrel?". Beginners often focus on the barrel rather than the clay as they pull the trigger . This does tend to make you slow down or stop the gun, as your eye comes off the target...

    pushing through.

When trying to get a good follow through as a newcomer ,I found that rather than counting one, two, three, after taking the shot , it was easier just to keep swinging until I saw the clay break . This is a more efficient way as it allows you to get to the second shot of a pair as quickly as...

    21 gram for sporting

Having patterned 21gms at various ranges I found that pattern density will fall off with distance as it will for any shell. As the 21gm shell has less pellets, the pattern density fall-off with distance will become a major problem at shorter distances than it would with bigger shells.I cannot see...

    21 gram for sporting

In my experience 21gm will break most crossing and quartering clays under 40 yards but if it is a DTL type target above 40 yards , a long rabbit or anything quartering away at long range you will need something bigger! I use 14 and half chokes all the time as I am not a fan of choke changing .I...

    Lost my mojo

Gil Ash adresses this problem in his books " If It Ain't Broke Fix It " and " You Gotta Be Out of Your Mind". Not everyone will agree with all he says but this would be a good place to start.

Consistency - how do you achieve it?

The scary thing that I learned the hard way is that it takes something like a thousand repetitions to learn to do something subconsciously. This means that you need to practise your fundamentals for a long time to clock up the number of repetitions to make it happen when you need it.
