Hi guys

just acquired a CG Maxum 32", anyone who has one what's your cartridge pref or any data off a pattern plate would be great?

Not sure if this helps, but I have a 32" Challenger, I shoot Sporting and use Hull Superfast, they seem a really good all rounder to me. I did like the fBlacks but quite pricey I thought.

A mate, also shoots a CG (who is "A" Class and shoots a load more than I do) is hooked on Gamebore White Gold.

I don’t have a Maxium but I do have a 32” summit assent which uses the same barrel and chokes. I seem to have settled with Fiocchi Fblack sporting 8,5 through 3/8 standard chokes for the most of my sporting shooting.

I have no pattern data nor any proof that they are any better than anything else out there. I did switch to Clever Super Targets for a 1000  as they were cheaper, very good shells absolutely no complaints with them.

But for some unknown reason I switched back to the Fblacks as my head seems to prefer paying the extra £20 per thousand.

Yes, should have made that clearer. I'm pretty sure the barrels/chokes are all similar on CG guns. So (in theory at least) they should perform similarly from a ballistics perspective at least.

Cheers chaps, just put some game bore Hv through it, 21/25 on the skeet - 1/4 1/4 chokes.

If it's a pretty generic barrel through range I will post some plate and data pics next week.

Will try the super fast in fibre on sporting.

I must say impressed with aspects of the gun, really pleased so far.

just need to hunt down another set of chokes to double up.

I have a maxum 32" sporter.

After trying the following, I have found no difference in performance between superfast, Fblacks, gamebore velocities Evos and black golds, and hull pro ones. All really good!

however, I have noticed that eley no matter which type (firsts, Olympics, vip), leave a shed load of crap to clean out of the barrels.

I find that I'm not a good enough a shot to notice difference in pattern, but notice recoil and dirt instead.

You just bought a three grand gun and you're thinking of using cheapo cartridges through it? Don't see the point really. Use something decent for goodness sake!

Who said anything about 3k, I said I acquired the gun, I was asking what cartridges people use for performance not price, I know A class shooters who use power red through 5k guns.

If you have a cartridge in mind and you shoot a CG please give us your recommendation.

After a fair bit of searching and testing, I did conclude that nowadays you can get something very decent without spending big money. I really reckon that cartridges have disproportionate price increase for minute technical benefits. There are a few nasty ones out there of course.

Will, decent is easy. Most of them are decent. We need to avoid the nasty, thumpy cheap rubbish that the makers put out to meet a requirement in the market for such a product. The price difference between cheap and reasonable would hardly buy you lunch on a Sunday.

Lunch on Sunday? Bacon sarnie and a mug of tea.  100 carts at 16p. as compared to 100 at 22p. Six quid? Its like buying supermarket fuel for your £30K car.

Well my forecast for 2015/16 will be bins full of  empty power blue and new game bore hv + shells.

stockist permitted of course!

Of course, all true. But if you shoot 300+ per week it's an additional £1000 pa.

I agree with this bit "We need to avoid the nasty, thumpy cheap rubbish that the makers put out to meet a requirement in the market for such a product" but I think you trip yourself up on this bit "The price difference between cheap and reasonable would hardly buy you lunch on a Sunday"

At the risk of straying off the point even more (heaven forbid) How many people only ever shoot 100 carts? You know well enough that many on here will shoot 1000's a month, so your £6 will soon add up to £600 quid, now that would be a pretty special Sunday lunch, even for those of us with £30+k cars

I mentioned this recently, but will again if I may...... Pal of mine shot with Eley VIP's for years, swore he'd never swap. Didn't think the "extra few quid was worth bothering about" The short version of the story is he had a slab of Superfasts from me, absolutely no discernible difference other than he now saves £70 a thousand.

The point is, why pay £240 a thousand for shells that £170 shells do just as well? .

So, back on topic....... I have found from a couple of years of trying different carts through a 32" CG Gun, that the Superfasts perform really well. The fBlacks were also very good, but not really better than the Hulls (AFAICS), so I did not see the point in paying more.

In short, I think you can actually get cheap AND reasonable.

I'm really enjoying this thread but would just like to find out why a given cartridge would work particularly well through a 32" CG ?   Surely a good shell is a good shell.

Personally think the £240 quid a thou merchants are having a laugh at our expense. There is nothing a shell retailing a LOT less won't do so long as it suits YOU.

So you're grumbling about the price of cartridges because you shoot a lot? Errrrrm?
