Gun down and wait till the bird is seen is FITASC. You can shoot sporting that way but most pre mount the gun.
ESP rules, gun up or down. I personally use a mixture of both, dependant upon the amount of time I have to see the target. A long incomer, gun down and then mount and shoot as the target reaches the 'killing point'. Teal or 'Trap' type targets I will shoot gun up, this also applies to low driven targets which I try to shoot in front, rather than overhead. It is whichever is best for your style of shooting. I was a Game shooter turned Clay shooter and old habits die hard.Gun up? Are you mad??
but seriously.. when I started shooting (30 years ago) I was always told that sporting should be shot gun down. It was only newbies who shot gun up. Now it seems that gun up is perfectly acceptable even at the highest level of competition.
Are there actually any rules regarding this issue in sporting??
