Got a pass from the management so decided to venture out. Didn't want to go too far, so opted for Caterham. I had noted that the Kent Sporting Champs was being held there, so looked forward to a good course. I haven't shot there in over a year, but quite like the topography which I think has the potential to put on some cracking targets and I like shooting in woodland settings as opposed to open fields.

Booked in - £37 (I'm led to believe £39 for Kent shooters, however can't confirm this) Not cheap and I have shot at grounds with better facilities/pedigree for the same sort of money.

The Course - Well they were all there to be shot, joint winners scored 97 apiece, however, what a poor excuse for a shoot. I appreciate that target presentation is a subjective topic, however, 12 stands which included 4 following pairs and 3 sim pairs!!!!

The 5 o-r pair stands were good and well balanced - targets to suit a range of abilities, no eye sight tests.

The 4 following pairs were lazy, uninspiring targets, (and due to the presentation/flight time/cyclical rate of the trap? shot like on report pairs) 3 of those stands had target presentations that I remember from my last visit.

The 3 sim pairs were with hindsight, well balanced, again however very similar to previous presentations and by this time, I'd had my fill of following/sim pairs.

Now, I appreciate that there is a finite amount of target presentations, which can be further limited by the landscape and that it could have been sheer coincidence that the targets were the same as a year ago.........but I doubt it.

Like many people, due to life (work, family etc.) getting in the way, I don't get to shoot anywhere as often as I used to, or would like, so my trips out are to be savoured. Time to spread my wings and head out further afield. For that money, I won't be going back.

I was down to go, but couldnt make it for family reasons.

I did see that the scores were fairly high. It will have been luck as the course varies a great deal in difficulty there. As you say the varied setting means that Caterham is definitely a wasted opportunity.

I came to that conclusion many years ago.

I still return about once a year to see if anything has changed, it never gets any better.

I shot Southdown with DAB it is a bit further to travel but much better value for money.

And well shot FieldandClay a well deserved win 89 at southdown is not easy , think I well have to come see you for a lesson

Still can't belive i missed them 2 on the last stand :yell: would have had 3rd place to myself

Thanks Matt,

I thought I'd seen some similar comments before somewhere, but couldn't find them. Much as F&C, I go about once a year, for convenience or to meet up with old friends. I lived in hope that as a County Champs. It would pull all the stops out & live up to it's potential...........clearly the answer was a resounding no!! Just posted in the hope I could save anyone else from making their annual pilgrimage.........it hasn't got any better!! :)

Well well well, I feel a bit better now, firstly because it was me who started a previous thread along very similar lines, and secondly because I decided not to go despite it being a Kent Championship shoot, instead spent a super afternoon with friends and family at the beach and it cost nothing.

This is indeed a wasted opportunity of a shoot, possibly the best topography in Kent peed down into single on report stand after stand and interjected with samey pairs you've shot last time round. :( As for £37 for the privilege, :???: I would NOT have paid £39 if I had gone.

PS. I had no idea they had a website but interestingly it makes great store about their toilet facilities :.: :.: , having used it, it felt like I was standing in the middle of four corrugated sheets held up with wooden posts dribbling into a trough, I almost felt like mooing.

First time I took DavidB there, he came back from the toilet and said 'that's a bit rural, I just had to queue up behind a badger' :)))

I can remember paying by cheque and having to make it payable to Chris Potter...............
