Got a pass from the management so decided to venture out. Didn't want to go too far, so opted for Caterham. I had noted that the Kent Sporting Champs was being held there, so looked forward to a good course. I haven't shot there in over a year, but quite like the topography which I think has the potential to put on some cracking targets and I like shooting in woodland settings as opposed to open fields.
Booked in - £37 (I'm led to believe £39 for Kent shooters, however can't confirm this) Not cheap and I have shot at grounds with better facilities/pedigree for the same sort of money.
The Course - Well they were all there to be shot, joint winners scored 97 apiece, however, what a poor excuse for a shoot. I appreciate that target presentation is a subjective topic, however, 12 stands which included 4 following pairs and 3 sim pairs!!!!
The 5 o-r pair stands were good and well balanced - targets to suit a range of abilities, no eye sight tests.
The 4 following pairs were lazy, uninspiring targets, (and due to the presentation/flight time/cyclical rate of the trap? shot like on report pairs) 3 of those stands had target presentations that I remember from my last visit.
The 3 sim pairs were with hindsight, well balanced, again however very similar to previous presentations and by this time, I'd had my fill of following/sim pairs.
Now, I appreciate that there is a finite amount of target presentations, which can be further limited by the landscape and that it could have been sheer coincidence that the targets were the same as a year ago.........but I doubt it.
Like many people, due to life (work, family etc.) getting in the way, I don't get to shoot anywhere as often as I used to, or would like, so my trips out are to be savoured. Time to spread my wings and head out further afield. For that money, I won't be going back.
