'Ulterior' motives? The economics don't stack up but Dubai like any other place has to compete to attract business. If any of the people who attended got to see the mall of the Emirates, the Burj al Kalifa, business centres, communications and all the other attractions then the Sheik will have achieved something more than a shooting competition. Generally shooters appear to have a bit of disposable income so the type of people you want to attract.

To echo the comments of a few, as a complete newbie I can see funding a weeks holiday for my wife and I. Got to be a good idea to arrive the week before to acclimatise a bit!
