The government opened a new shooting ground

OT/UT and ZZ . Only 20 mins down the rd.. What a result!!
Amazing!!! The govt opened a clay ground!!! Shame our govt don't do the same thing, as opposed to trying to get rid of us shooters. Are you out there now or are you going soon?

Dad checking it out next month.. Will make a couple if trips over the winter though. Have been told its very good..

Robert , I know it's probably been covered before but any useful insights for the newbys from yourself on getting a gun abroad .

Best person to ask would be Nicola Heron on transporting shotguns..

Never done it myself but very aware that a lot of airlines don't take guns so if you want to take a gun check the airline before you book. I know quite a few target shooters who shoot for GB who have said this.

Also use a very strong case as baggage handlers are not terribly careful! One shooter I know had his rifle dropped from the cargo door onto the concrete!

Just seen Facebook message from Donald Macintosh, GB small-bore rifle coach, that Croatian Air left 3 GB team rifles and kit behind at Heathrow so someone has to do the round trip from Zagreb to Heathrow again of 6 hours to get them!

This was not what I had in mind when I said a lot of airlines don't take guns!

If they have gone through customs then you do not normally have to fly back for them....they come on the next available flight.

I always ask at the gate if the guns have been loaded yet.....and ALWAYS make a point of thanking the captain for flying our guns as we pass the cockpit on the way to our seats. If no one knows what you are on about that signals that you have a problem to sort out before takeoff....just saying..!

Your so right on that one Robert.. On way back from Germany I actually saw tha baggage handler throw my gun case... Best case for transporting has to be the peli case range and the wheels in the bottom just make it that little bit easier.

Gun cases and ammo cases 'have' to be lockable ones...... (The incident described by Robert must have been a novice abroad who forgot to roll his locks after customs - madness not to do so - can result in guns not going on plane).

Ammo boxes with no locks, simply do not get on the plane.

I once saw a loader standing on my box in the old days to get a better lift of cases into the aircraft........no banging on windows can help so make sure you have a proper airline proof hard case.

Easy jet are the cheapest and easiest airline to move guns about. Book the gun on at the same time as luggage (see sports equipment section).

BA 2nd......but more expensive. Plus you have to ring them after flight has been booked to let them know what you are bringing and they book them on and you pay the charge at the airport (£50 each leg). But if you forget to ring them to book guns on....THEY WILL NOT GET ON THE PLANE.....end of.

Then.....when you have done all that.....the pilot has the last say.....and a stroppy one can refuse to fly them whether you have paid or not.....it is his call.......so ALWAYS make a point of thanking the pilot /captain for flying your guns.....either by a quick word as you pass the cockpit on the way in.....or in a written note that the hosteytute gives him during the flight......and if you are on the way back with bling.....send a note of the wins because they love reading it out during the flights getting everyone cheering......true story...!!

I avoid ones like TAP (take another plane) for Portugal because they can change flights at will and dump you at an airport that is in the same country....but hours away from where you wanted to be and where your car hire is. (GBR team 2009 booked Porto....dumped in Lisbon.....with..'oh it us only a 2 hour drive'...... )

Edit

P.s. You need to take your shotgun certificate to get out and in the UK. you need EFP for getting in and out of Europe but if going outside Europe other visa conditions will apply for the country you are entering. Some times for 'some' countries you also need an export visa to get out of the UK ....like Argentina and like we do for Cairo in October. This is done through a specialist agency....if anyone s approaching any 'unusual' shooting trip and needs to check import / export visas.....pm me.
