In recent years I've been enjoying watching the PDC and BDO darts competitions on TV and would love to see the UK Trap shooting scene enjoy a such a revival with some proper commercialised support. The question is how can this be done?

My first thought would be for the CPSA to make some use for their Top Twenty rankings. Instead of paying prize money at each shoot the competition money goes to a central fund that is distributed through the top twenty rankings at the cut off date?

I open it to the floor. Discuss

Hmm nobody interested in improving the competition aspect of Trap?  Fair enough.

My post was intended as a "starter for ten" to get the ball rolling because as most Trap shooters invest heavily in their chosen discipline and with most class prizes being £10 - £20 (a relatively small amount considering the costs and depending on turnout) it could be more worthwhile shooting to compete for a top twenty placing linked to a cash prize.

I think it would also increase competition entries in OT and provide something to work towards (incentive) over the course of a competition season as i don't believe the current system does the shooters any justice. Not just that but there would be other benefits as well because the scores and averages would speak for themselves.

Hi Jay, top twenty rankings would struggle with selective manoeuvring for position [weather, chosen grounds etc]. What I would like to see which is not possible with the current funding structure is that 10% of Olympic or Sport England funding be awarded at selection shoots as prizemoney £3000, £2000, £1000. Should be the same people who win it shouldn't it. Or might we see unexpected entrants from other disciplines of the undeniable talent that exists in the sport.

Interesting ideas.

no comment at this stage.

I seem to remember many years ago that trap shooting had some big sponsors, including Rolex. It would seem that these big money sponsors have now vanished. High level sponsors could well lift the profile of shooting as well as prize money, but how do we attract them? I guess that our governing bodies need to address this!

Sponsorship is not seen as a good way to spend one's marketing/advertising budget.

Be honest how many if you have bought from a sponsor because an event has been sponsored by the company - e.g. Rolex??????

Hi Fred, there would of course be rules and conditions for the "top twenty" idea over and above the existing rules. I also like your idea, but I was thinking based on the assumption that Sport England and all these other "organisations" wouldn't have anything to do with it. Whether it's true or not doesn't matter really, but it's my perception that those organisations within the current funding structure are being run by those with vested interests (or are easily influenced by those who do) and do not have an appropriate checks and balances in place to be properly independent and fair.

Love the last point! It is funny how a substantial prize fund brings out the bandits ! The "top twenty" system requires a competition seasons worth of commitment though so it would reward those who commit to the discipline.

I hear you there Robert. My preference is Tag. I find Rolex (and gold jewellery in general) a bit too showy for me.

I've always thot that one of those electric dog training collars around the shooters neck would provide some real incentive

Now there's a business opportunity to market these as a coaching aid.

Saying that, some people pay good money to be treated like that (allegedly!).  :sarcastic:

Would just like to add....of no constructive use to this discussion at all but... very well done, probably the first time I've seen the word Incentivisation in a topic heading on any forum let alone a shooting site! Triple word score for you my friend!

I didn't think it was a proper word but hey ho :)

I tell you what would incentivise me more ........... winning every now and then :)

Then his scrabble score will be revoked... Cheating swine!!! ;-) incentivized is definately a word but you could be right... But I'm not going to look it up... I'm sad but not quite that sad yet.

.. Meanwhile back at the topic

Trap could definately do with being 'sex'd up' a bit to make it more appealing. Cash injections and prizes at the top will only do so much, only a small number of people ever going to reach a standard high enough to be in with a chance of the cash. Wish I knew the answer, fantastic sport to be a part of, would love to see a revival.

Right Ian...........all you need to do is drop a class or two!!!!!! Someone said it was called "Sandbagging" once.......not that I would ever do such a thing of course, but I did get accused of it back in the days of the old Bisley League. In those days if you were in A or whatever the top class was, well you had no chance! Most of that class consisted of England or top County shooters, so to get into the prizes you had to be consistently bloody good, or get into a lower class.

Yep - not a word...

Incentivising Performance would work though.

Ha, i knew it.

Jake sorry pal you Cant use it at scrabble :)
