Nick - The physio was a young lad in the NHS at the local cottage hospital and it was he who said he was not allowed to refer for 3 months.  I told the doc I was going private at 2.5 months and was in to see the specialist shortly after and then scan and then operation which was about 13 weeks after it happened.  Perhaps I should have shouted sooner.  I didn't envisage residual nerve damage and nobody warns you in advance so I just wanted to warn Wesley.  Ibuprofen can be hard on the stomach and must only be taken after food.  I was given something stronger than ibuprofen but was also given something to take each day to line the stomach to protect it.
Hi Robert, Strange that the Physio felt he was not allowed to refer. I'm just a community Physio but never had a problem with GPs taking my advice and getting scans/referrals pushed through. Most GPs welcome the advice of a Physio regarding MSK conditions as we are usually seen as the ones in the know... I guess maybe some of us are a bit more persistent than others.

ibuprofen should be avoided with certain conditions. People should always check with pharmacist/GP before taking. I know I can't take it due to condition I have.

I take prescription naproxen. Gp never said or asked about anything just gives it ?

I assume it's a heavy duty ibuprofen?

It is a heavier duty anti-inflammatory than ibuprofen. Your GP will know your history and medications though so should be fine...

Phew

I can report after a lazy day on Monday and many stretching excersises and naproxen the knackered back is now back to its usual manageable self.

First of all thank you to both Robert and ips. I am currently on a course of Naproxen 500 (sounds like an American car race) and I am due back at GP's next week. I do not take tablets under normal circustances, BUT when something stops me from shooting, well what is a guy to do ? ips, I will see what Doc says next week, but could well get the Physio's details from you. I am going to Catton Hall tomorrow (promised to take Grandkids) so will see how things go, but only plan on doing 50 instead of my usual 100. Thanks again Guy's your help and advice is really appreciated. W.

No probs keith, hope your mended soon.

Two spine surgeries have taught me that just going with whatever meds the doc hands you is a bad thing to do.  The internet provides a wealth of drug information from people who used the sometimes crap.  Make absolutely sure that the drug prescribed is being used in an approved manner.  I found that a popular pastime is for docs to prescribe off-label with what seems little regard for WELL-KNOWN side effects that can righteously damage you.  Use the 'net to determine applicability and tell the doc that you are.

good luck

Well, just a bit of an update really. I am due at Hospital tomorrow so hopefully will learn more then. I am reduced to shooting just 50 every 2 weeks, I have had to discontinue the anti-inflammatory tablets because they were causing terrible stomach upsets and constipation. It was uncanny really, the Guys that I shoot with knew that I was constipated, they would say "here's Westley, he's full of s**t" ! Just a shame they can not predict the source of the problem though. I have tried some of the things suggested above, which has increased the mobility in my shoulder, now if I can get rid of the pain too, the jobs a good un.

If you are having stomach trouble with naproxen or ibuprofen then tell the doc and he should prescribe a stomach liner like Omeprazole 20mg capsules which certainly calmed my tum down.

The other thing that springs to mind is that the first time I had slipped disc about 15 years ago I went to a chiropractor who took money off me for 6 months.  I didn't know I had a slipped disc until I saw a consultant and he sent me for an MRI scan which showed it up. He then said that there was nothing that a chiropractor could have done to "cure" my problem.  I might enjoy periodic relief from some pain but it would always come back.  He basically said that I had been ripped off paying for treatment that was no good!

Morale of the tale - get to see a consultant to get an MRI scan which is the only thing that will show it up.  Then your consultant can advise what can be done!

Thank you for that Robert, that is the action plan for tomorrow.

or go and see a Physio who can also assess and refer on for scans. Most decent physios will be able to spot neuro symptoms very quickly and will refer on to orthopaedics. Most GPs will take our word for it and will just refer straight to Radiology for MRI. It is difficult to go straight to a consultant without going via a physio or GP.

Word of warning, NSAIDs (Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) do not suit everyone and even taking omeprazole can still have harmful side effects. Speak with Doc who prescribed them as there are other meds you can take instead which do not have the side effects. I know this because I can't take NSAIDs even with omeprazole.

Nick, Robert,

Went to hospital today, good check out by Physio, then to Xray. I am now awaiting an MRI appointment, so at least things are moving along. Have contacted GP's Surgery regarding tablets and awaiting their recall tomorrow.  Quite painful tonight due to exertion today but hoping to tackle a local 50 birder this Sunday. Thanks again for the advice Guys, it really is appreciated. W.

Hope you get sorted Keith I have bad shoulder and neck as well as the sciatica so I know what it's like

Good to hear that you will be getting a scan.  That should show the severity of the problem and a consultant will be able to tell you what can be done about it.  I hope that there is not a waiting list so you can get sorted out soon.  The pain is very debilitating.  I ended up with nerve damage and a loss of feeling in my leg which has left me with an ever so slight limp but that's a lot better than having to endure the awful sciatica from the hip down to the foot.

Thanks Ian, struggling in sending PM's on here at present, unable to type any content in the message bit. Must be doing something wrong or even the Forum knows about my constipation !

Not just you I could not get a text box to reply to a post at one point.
