Target shooting is a good reason to put forward to obtain a firearm certificate providing that they back up the application with membership of a Home Office approved club for 6 months and show evidence to back up their application in terms of regular shooting and having adequate referees to support their application.  Any grant for target shooting limits the use of the gun to Approved Shooting Ranges which is printed on the certificate.

If you doubt this then read the Guidance to Police by the Home Office on this subject of good reason to own a firearm - a whole chapter is devoted to it although a lot is devoted to the shooting of vermin and game.

Labour went further than the Conservatives and banned ISSF .22 cartridge pistols both single shot and semi-auto so GB is now completely sunk in terms of competing in these disciplines at Commonwealth Games and Olympics let alone other ISSF competitions.

For long guns yes, but no longer for pistols (LBP and Muzzle loading excepted) which you can still get for other good reasons but not for target shooting, stalkers, stockmen, knackermen still have pistols if they have good reason .38,.22rf, 9mm etc sometimes single shot or restricted sometimes not.

I can certainly appreciate the attendant issues, but what Robert has to say here is what you should REALLY be concerned with.

Pissing contests among the opposition is what politicians love!  If you people and your reps don't stay focused on an arguable issue then you are doomed.

Well, we're all doomed anyway, but if you play the game a bit better you can put it off longer.  Nothing is more dangerous to politicians than guns in the hands of the public.  No matter what they say, guess who goes under the bus just as soon as that is politically feasible??

You best be working on focusing on the problem instead of bringing up others that don't make you look any better.

just sayin  .....................
Spot on.

Raising side issues, as important as they may be, will nevertheless serve only to distract or worse, undermine any effort to resist yet more control on the owners of legally held firearms.

The simple truth is that calls for greater control on gun useage is inevitable. Events such as these will only ever result in people (for whatever reason, be it personal or political) taking the most obvious moral stance.  Most obvious that is to the wider public.

So Wonko is spot on. This is not the best time to be raising "side" issues, particularly those that might turn and bite back.

Police in Kent on the ball with regards SGC's in my experience.
Oddly the Kent Police have had a reputation of being "very reasonable" for a long time. I recall an article from possibly 20 years ago, I can't remember where now, but I think it was in The Shooting Times. In amongst other points it compared the widely different application of The Firearms Act across the various Police regions. In particular, it commented on how odd it was that Northumbrian Police where far more "picky" (my words) than the Kent Police. The point was, if asked most people would assume it would be the other way around.

Not entirely sure why I shared that, but there you are

I was looking at long barrel pistols the other day on the net. I saw a rather tasty looking Taurus 45 wheel gun in stainless.

This whole situation is very unfortunate obviously for the family affected but also for us legitimate gun owners as serious questions are being asked about whether we should be able to own them.

Sadly the worse gun crimes committed by legitimate gun owners in this country transpires after that they shouldn't have had guns in the first place.

I was fishing yesterday and had Radio Surrey on and the topic of the morning was about the murder in Farnham and wether normal people should have access to guns. It was nice to hear so many people calling in to defend shooting and the way that guns are controlled in the UK.

They also had a vet who went to the place in Farnham in 2004 and filmed using a hidden camera and even before he went in the Police and locals told him that he was trouble.

Ultimately the biggest mistake is from Surrey Police giving him the guns back.

I came into clay shooting about thirty years ago, all this gun control stuff was going on before that time! It will never go away so we must just get on with shooting!  We must also hope that the governing bodies do more to change how shooters are viewed by the non shooting public.
