Full review over on the main site - but a quick word about my first go at Helice today at A1SG. It was the Essex County Championships - so there was a high chance of me making a complete pudding of myself in front of some experienced ZZ shooters. It was great to see Nicola and ELVIS there, and to meet some new shooters as well.
I had three practice shots - and missed them all - couldn't figure it out at all - clearly a completely different technique required with a much more 'see it, shoot it' approach. So when I stepped up to start the competition my heart was racing, and all I could hear was Nicola saying 'see it, shoot it' in my ears. First pair dead - and I went on to shoot a 10ex15 - which wasn't last so I've come away happy.
Some great shooting going on - there were two 15ex15 straights - one from the excellent junior, Nathan Hales who was on fire, and plenty of cards were only 1 away for the day. The Essex title was tied between Bill Logan and Matthew Coward-Holley who both finished on 13ex15 and were into a single barrel shoot-off as I left for the day. I'm sure we'll get an update on here before long.
My thoughts on Helice? It's excellent fun, and I will definitely do it again - it is expensive for the amount of shots you will take in a day - but this isn't your usual clay shooting and these aren't your usual targets. Everyone there was great fun and there was some great shooting and good laughs between the very competitive shooters.
I will certainly be shooting the Berkshire championship on April 7th back at A1SG - any takers?
