Personally I would not go to a chain if I wanted to be sure of a good optometrist and one who understands shooting. I have heard too many horror stories. I imagine the chains pay at the bottom end of the spectrum and by and large get what they pay for!

I go to Mike Taylor of a Bill & Taylor in Devon and he has shooters from all over the country go to see him, though he specialises more in rifle shooting.

He was photographing eyes before anyone else and now does scanning before anyone else locally so I know that I am getting a state of the art eye test as well as good specs and shooting lenses for both pistol and rifle and he does shooters a good deal.

Trouble is I live in deepest darkest D&G so going to the guys you recommend means at least 1 overnight stay, though I'm sure if my shooting reaches a competitive standard it'll be worth the expense.

The only trouble with reactolite lenses is 1 they don't 'react' through glass and take a bit of time to do it so I prefer to go with a fixed tint.

My only concern with getting high street glasses is the safety angle, will call in to my local shop and see if they do a tinted polycarbonate range.

I go for the old fashioned aviator type glasses for driving and a smaller frame for my reading glasses

To be clear, I now use a pair from Ed Lyons. React to light ones, in a large Oakley Frame. I have a very straightforward focal distance issue that needs correcting, all else is good. Definitely see Ed if you have any complex eye issues though.

Do you know what i wish i just had a decent pair of clear or very slightly tinted as i am sick of picking the correct lens only for the light to change half way through the line then there very wrong. There must be a tint that will enhance orange clays and that is usable in all conditions ?

Which frame did you go with? I was up with Ed last weds and was keen on the flak jacket XLJ's. Alas they did not look as good on my face as on Ed Solomons so I went for Half Jacket 2.0's. Was amazed when Ed said Oakley normally ship out prescription specs in just 4 days!

I originally wanted Radarlocks but was put off as they use the implants for prescription lenses.

Mine are big ugly square things, called Deviations. While wearing them, I look like I would wave at aeroplanes. I struggle with dizziness / disorientation with any curve in the lens, hence these worked best for me.

Yesterday at Bisley shooting ABT I noticed that I don't see the target clearly. It's not quite double but it's definitely out of focus and I don't pick it up particularly early, but then I don't know what's 'normal'.

Trap shooters: after the target flash coming out of the trap, when do you see it clearly and is the sight of the clay a good definition?

Tobi, if you have not already, get a simple specsavers eye-test. They will tell you if anything is not right; specifically whether or not you require a distance prescription.

I'd trust spec savers with my eyes about half as far as I could throw the bas7ards...

As said, if you have issues, see ed Lyons, but the high street folks can tell you if you need simple focal adjustment for distance

I wouldn't recommend anybody goes to sh*tsavers. Worst place i have had the misfortune to go.

If you cant make it to Ed Lyons for whatever reason, i recommend you go to see a good local independent optician who doesn't have quota's for selling glasses or to complete the eye test in 5 minutes flat and get the next one in.

Or go to the one in Maidenhead! It's very good! :)
