    Left Handed Guns

I completely agree with this - I am left-handed, but have a dominant right eye. At my first clay lesson at the National Clay Centre, the instructor tried me with a left-hand stance: awful - felt uncomfortable and couldn't break a thing. He switched me to my right side, and suddenly everything...

    Browning 425 & steel shot

Thank you everyone for the replies - if I do use steel, I'll check the carts are not HP.

    Browning 425 & steel shot

With the debate that is going on about lead shot, I checked my Browning 425 for proof marks for steel shot - there are none. However, the other day I got out the case that came with the gun (I bought it secondhand and had put the case in the attic), and I found tucked in with the guarantee...

    Flask

I'd recommend the steel flasks by Corkcicle (www.corkcicle.com). They sell them on the grounds that they keep drinks cold for longer, but the reverse is also true - they are really good at keeping things warm: my daughter often takes soup to school for lunch. I heat the flask with boiling water...

Shooting near Yeovil, end of February?

Thank you to all who have given me suggestions - I’ll be ringing round the grounds to see what is available.

Shooting near Yeovil, end of February?

I am going to be near Yeovil of the last weekend in February with four friends, who would like to try a 'have a go' session. Can I ask for any recommendations on grounds in about a half hour drive from Yeovil (we're actually staying in Barwick, which is a small village nearby)? I have checked...

    Cleaning kit or separates

I was asking myself the same question the other day. Bear in mind that I have owned my gun all of seven months, so treat my responses with that in mind. After getting the gun, I bought a basic bore snake, some Napier cleaner in a spraycan & a tube of Napier VP90 grease - all from an online...

    How do you store yours?

My barrels are horizontal, so I don't have to worry about oil: I keep the guns in that useful rack thing behind my head in the pickup truck. What? I do remember to wind the windows up when I park the car at night; no point in taking chances.

    Barrels-to-stock, or stock-to-barrels?

Thank you, Mr Lot. Apologies to others for discussing 'minutiae', but I am trying to absorb a lot of stuff here that many of you will take for granted after many years of shooting.

    Barrels-to-stock, or stock-to-barrels?

Having had a few hours of tuition now at the same (large) shooting school here in the South East, I am a little mystified on a simple safety point. The first instructor taught me that once I have loaded the gun, and keeping the barrels in a downward slant, I lift the stock to the barrels to...

    Browning 425 What the flock?

Sorry for the late reply, but I have the manual that came with my s/h 425 I bought last year. The book lists 6 different models with several variants of each - 2 x Hunting, 2 x Hunter, 3 x Sporting, 3 x Sporter, 1 x Skeet & 2 x Trap. As a basic difference, both Hunting and Hunter models...

    Shotgun Grant Application Met Police

My application in Surrey took seven weeks from posting form to receiving certificate. The civilian FLO who came to see me was very positive and helpful, as I had called him beforehand to discuss the position of my cabinet. It's odd how attitudes seem to vary round the country: Surrey's attitude...

    First steps in Surrey

Thank you to everyone here - some brilliant suggestions and I really appreciate you taking the time to answer, particularly those that have extended personal invitations. I am overwhelmed by the number of options, so I will be working my way through all the locations and timings, and then trying...

    First steps in Surrey

I have got into clay shooting through a friend, who was really keen to start earlier this year & encouraged me to go with him to Bisley for lessons.  Typically, what has happened is that while I have put in the gun cabinet, sent in certificate application, had the FLO visit & had the...

I'm new here myself, but welcome too! Jon.

Thank you for all the welcomes and useful advice. I got home from work yesterday to find my certificate had arrived in the post, so I am looking forward to doing some shopping now. I reckon the whole process, from putting in the application to receiving the certificate, took around seven weeks...

    CPSA vs BASC - insurance

As someone who is new to all this, I was slightly confused as to which organisation to join. I thought I should have one or the other, since shooting grounds seem to want to know your membership number (presumably to show you have 3rd party insurance), and secondly, I thought the associations...

Finners, No idea yet. At the Nat. Clay Centre, we were shooting a Browning and a Miroku. I thought the Miroku felt like the better gun; I couldn't say why, though - it just felt 'better'. When I said as much to our instructor, he pointed out the Miroku was around £4000 of 'better'! I think I...
