Thanks for all the advice.  I think I will chip in some money and find a Beretta 302 or 303.  

Excellent choice too, you could also consider a pump action thing,  but you WILL feel the recoil more.

I have to go with the Mossberg pump suggestion.  For a beater gun that will be subjected to God-knows-what I cannot think of anything more likely to be there when it's needed.  And if something bad happens to it you'll be free of remorse.
