Basically, pictures posted on this website or others cannot be used by anyone without a written authorization from the one that took the picture. There have been many instances of unauthorised use by several in either their website or facebook etc... Pictures posted are for your viewing and not use! Illegal use of proprietary images will now be prosecuted to the full extent, in ANY country.

Govern yourself accordingly,

Henry

...and as a man once said to me, "let them sue me, I don't own a thing, what do I have to lose!?'!?"!

Was this just for information or did something provoke this outburst?

Have you ever uploaded any images to this website and have any been used as opposed to just viewed?

I only post what I'm happy for anyone to use, blimey, it's only an image, lifes a bit short to be anal about things like this, if your worried copywrite em.

What shall I do with the picture I have of sloppyone off here. I have it on my dart board for when I need to let off steam :)))

Not sure what has driven Henrys comments - but I'll lay it out here, my pictures are posted under what is called a 'Creative Commons' licence.

That means that anyone can reuse one of my photographs, wherever they want as long as it is not for Commercial Purposes.  If the usage is for commercial purposes (i.e. a website pulling business for their shooting ground, or coaching or whatever) - all they need to do is ask, and credit me - I will never license a photo for money (I'm not good enough for that).

Anyone wants details of that licensing arrangement, its here : http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/

Henry makes a good point - this should be clear throughout my site (I'll put that on my growing to-do list) and should serve as a reminder to everyone that pictures should not just be nicked.

Matt would that apply to any photos published on here by members?

Good question - honestly, I had never given it much thought.

For me - this goes back to my "the internet is for everybody" principle, information deserves to be free and good art (whether written or pictorial or otherwise) should be shared for the good of the sport.  So for me, I'd like everything to be shareable.

On the flip side - I know that some members invest a lot of time and energy into creating content (some are professional), and they are the least likely to want to share for free - I'm also OK with that, if I thought I could earn money from my crap snaps, then I might try - but I'm a snapper not a photographer.

I would need to do some research about whether a blanket license can be applied to uploaded stuff.

My personal opinion is that you should not try to impose a blanket creative commons license for all images posted here. For a start that will not be legal for images that are posted here but hosted elsewhere and secondly you would need to make it clear in the terms and conditions when each member signs up.  If you were to try and implement a site wide free for all then I would not post images, I suspect that some others would also be put off posting images too (there is at least one professional photographer who is a member).

Nobody can legally just rip off the images and use them without express permission, my images will be copyrighted and if I found them being used without permission and/or payment I would initially send an invoice and if that were unpaid I would then take legal action.  I am trying (and failing) to not be snotty over this and to be honest if you are nice enough to ask first then I would most likely send you high resolution files as I do actually like my work to be seen.  However, for commercial use I would most likely want payment.

Just my 2 pence worth.

Yep - sorry Si, should have been clearer - if there was a site wide license, it would be more restrictive, and I would stop downloading/sideloading from the site to protect members.

Pro's and people that care should have their work protected - personally, I'm OK with people using MY photos.. because they are snaps - unless one is good enough to be used commercially - then I'd like that decision.

Works like a charm!
Hendry should approach Viagra, they could print that picture on the back of the pack,

"In the case of emergency, when the effects of Viagra need to be counteracted, stare at this picture for ten seconds, if this doesn't work...please seek psychiatric help!!!

WARNING!!! Exposer to this picture for longer than 10 seconds may induce the following side effects;

1.Nausia of vomiting

2.Blindness

3.Ireversable psychiatric disorder

4.Uncontrollable fits of laughter

Tinfoil hats are out again!

If you don't want an images use to be out of your control don't put it on the internet. Simple as that.

Also, no one on here is posting pictures of their undisclosed blueprints for the worlds next multi-billion pound idea now are they.

Gary is spot on, what kind of a looney would post a pic or indeed text on the world wide interweb thingie that he /she had an issue with being viewed / used.

Don't post it .... simples

Hi Matt,

Just a suggestion, but you may want to check the terms of the board's sign-up agreement which every member has to agree to when joining the forum, and you may find that once posted on here, any content, unless expressly warranted at being under copyright to a named person/organisation, becomes yours as owner of the forum.

The bottom line is, if the poster doesn't want their work on the Web, then don't post it on the Web, unless the work is watermarked with their name and copyright.

Other, i.e. previous published, written content, e.g. an article from a magazine or paper which has been lifted from the web, comes under the 'Fair Use' terms which, in summary, means that as long as you only use/quote, for example, the opening paragraph or first few lines of an article, and then submit the URL to that article(s) so that others may click on it and read it in full, then you're covered for Fair Use, as you're not quoting the entire article without citing copyright to its author.
