Well the press is mounted just waiting for my components to be delivered.

I have to say that going off the prices of the components cartridge manufacturers must make sod all on a slab

I guess us ‘public’ can only buy components at ‘retail’ prices with the relevant markup rather than buying bulk components at wholesale or cost prices as the brands would?

I imagine there will be something very satisfying about making your own

Yes i have contacted him and he is very very competitive BUT unable to ship the powder or primer, which is a real shame. Once i get settled with the whole thing i may have a road trip in the caravan and get a bulk stock from him

Well we shall find out iggy. I believe there is little if any saving unless your loading  410 or big game loads but for me its just for a challenge and to understand the science a bit more rather than any financial saving however it would be great if i could save even a few pounds along the way. First project is a recipe for a pigeon load of 28-30g fibre 6s in a 70mm case

I dont like fish

I used to have a Lee Loadall 43 years ago. I can remember clamping it to the blue Formica table in my Dad’s kitchen . I bought it at John Longstaff’s in Pudsey , the forerunner of Henry Kranks which is still trading in that town today . 

Luckily , at the time I used to work for an IMI subsidiary, and some of the drivers coming  up from Witton would have a few Eley bits and pieces they had picked up in their travels , which they would trade for an expedited unloading slot ! 

We used to follow the well off blokes around Eldwick gun club , we picked up their Winchester and Remi compression formed hulls . As we knew better than the manufacturer , we reloaded these “ hot “ , with  an overload and sealed the crimps with a soldering iron .  Of course we never , ever , ever , loaded musket balls .....  it’s a wonder we came to our mid twenties with all of our fingers , and without Winchester  and browning auto bolts in our teeth. 

John Longstaff, now there is a name from the past. I used to buy boxes of 1000 mixed Eley cartridges minus the lead so we chopped the cases and save all the powder then remove the primers. I also had a friend who often bought in lead shot which I shared out with lads at the club as most of us home loaded in those days.

Oh the days of cheap cartridges.......

There is a company called Game and Clay who are reloading specialists and I think they are exhibiting at the Northern Shooting Show in May, well worth contacting them, good people.

Yes  ! IMI owned Eley at the time the factory was Kynoch works in Birmingham , they used to send all sorts of rejects up to Pudsey , and the drivers called in at the place I worked , hence the chopped cartridges you bought and various “ freebies “ that ended up with the shooters where I worked . As a 21 year old on Trainee wages I wasn’t going to worry about why those Eley cartridges were rejected , they all seemed to go bang ...  

Got all my components this morning from a real old school smith in gatstang, very nice old bloke all the recipes in his head which he kindly shared. I was like a kid in a sweat shop, i could have spent all day rooting in his workshop and chatting to the gentleman.

I must confess that I keep looking at the Mec loaders with serious interest and intend reviewing the gear at the Northern Shooting Show.

Bloke called Alan Myers, big bore specialist now retired but still dabbling, this bloke knows everything about anything to do with guns and shooting. Encyclopedic brain is an understatement. I could have talked to the bloke for ever and a day and only touch the surface

Oh, and he had brand new mec press in stock and i need it

If you get the chance to attend the show Ian, it will be well worth it as the Mec loaders will be there I think so get your passport a nd have a drive into Yorkshire, Harrogate to be precise.

the loaders were all working at the last show so I assume they will be again but I am going to phone Clay and Game to check.
