My son is 11 in a couple of weeks and will be receiving a 20 bore shotgun for his Birthday, suggestions for light recoil cartridges greatly appreciated

Thanks guys, although my son isn't going to buy into pink cartridges though...  when  you are 11 real men DON'T wear pink and my 7 year old would be delighted that his brother is using 'girl's' cartridges, i can imagine endless piss takes for the whole summer...

I notice that Hull do also do subsonic (getting Fiocchi here is sporadic at best) - any views on those?  I will take a look at the Gamebore Super Competition as local shop has them in stock, i guess the way forward is to buy a few boxes of each and test them.

Thanks for advice - please keep ideas coming!

It's possible I am dreaming this or I'm confused but I thought when they made the Amber cartridge they also had an equivalent one for boys with a more boyish name to them and not pink.

Good thinking of you to try a few brands , the Gamebore Super seem softer than the Hull sub sonics .But felt recoil is always a matter of personal experience.

Quite possible, however as I will most likely have to clean the gun Eley are off the menu, once bitten and all that!

You’re not going mad I believe they were called ‘’so young’ but obviously didn’t sell well.

My 11 years old Grandson has been using Eley CT, in 21 grams without any problems.  They were the cheapest at the time and I have used several thousand of them when I was Instructing youngsters, all without issue. I also used Express 28 bore in 14 gram, when the Grandkids were younger. The guns were both Yildiz with Cyl and I/Cyl. chokes. As has been said, recoil is NOT the real issue, but gunfit is,  that will affect the 'felt recoil' .

The Hull Pro Twenty 21g is the softest cartridge that I've found for a 20 bore, fibre only in 21g I think though. Every other 21g 20 bore cartridge I've tried has felt harsh in comparison.

How do you rate the Yildiz, my lad is also 11 and been thinking about taking the plunge with one of these junior models

Very highly, I never had the slightest problem with them. I sold the 28 bore recently as the kids had outgrown it and it went to a 12 years old for his Birthday. He shot several good pigeons with it the same afternoon, I was told. That gun also had a full sized spare stock, so that Dad/Grandad could have a play too  !  I would search for a used model with a full stock, which I then had shortened to 13" WITH a Kick-eeze pad fitted. Problem with the Youth model is,  it is 13 1/2" LoP,  which was too long for either of my Grandkids. 13" being about right, but with the added benefit of the pad. I was also able to keep the cut off piece to be added later, as required. The fitted Yildiz pad is a bit hard, compared to the Kick-eeze.  My local club have a few Yildiz guns, which have seen a bit of use,  but never a problem with any of them. I know a few Instructors who have had various other Turkish guns and they have all raved about them being far better and cheaper than the Yildiz, strange that NONE of them still have them though  ??  Look for a used 28 or even a 20, dependant on the Lads build, get it cut down and then contact the Importer, Entwistle's of Preston and buy a full length stock for around £100.............. then let playtime begin   !!!........sorted !

thats great thankyou

Hatsun Escort is another choice. Comes with loads of options to get fit correct, cycle even 19g loads but because of lower recoil 21 and 24g become a usable option. Reduced weight also useful. My son used his for a year or so and we sold it straight away for just about what we paid. Only real down side is that allowing them to use 24g cartridges they will soon start to beat you!
