Is there a rule of thumb for cartridge selection for sporting clays? do I need a choice of cartridges for different targets, high tower driven, long distance crossers etc...? or do I just stick to 23g (I think) club cartridges?

Is barrel length a personal thing or is there an objective advantage in different disciplines? Does it depend on the rest of the gun - balance etc? I’m going to give sporting clays a bash; advice seems to say 30” barrels, but I can’t seem to get the root of the reasoning behind this. Thanks...

Returning to clay shooting after a 25 year hiatus. I'm in west yorks and plan to shoot at Coniston.  Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.
