    CPSA Safety Officers Course

I've recently joined a very small local club which only has approx 6 active members (approx 20 members in total).  The club has some traps in a field and a container for a clubhouse so is a very small affair but they do local have a go days and the like.  I was thinking it might be a good idea...

    Shooting Jacket

When I started shooting about three years ago I got a Percussion shooting vest which has served me well.  In the summer it is light and doesn't overheat me and in the winter I've been wearing it over a regular jacket with it just acting as pocket space for cartridges.  This can be a bit bulky at...

    How many shotguns

I read recently that the average number of shotguns held on a SGC in the UK is 2.4.  This means that assuming a standard bell curve distribution the majority of people have 2 or 3 shotguns.  I used to have 2 but went down to 1 as I found I was really only shooting the 1 but an acquaintance of...

Do snap caps actually prevent damage?

I asked my local instructor at the shooting grounds if I was going to break something from dry firing the shotgun and he just said try not to do it all the time club guns have been dry fired thousands of times and he's never seen one break.   Having said that I use them sometimes.  Sometimes...

    Drumtochty Castle

The castle is only a mile outside the village but the shoot is up the hill a good bit away from the castle.  Everyone piles into 4x4s and you drive up deep into the estate grounds.   I really enjoyed it because you are forced to shoot instinctively, if you try to aim you'll be behind it every...

    Drumtochty Castle

Well I was lucky enough to be invited to a simulated drive at Drumtochty Castle yesterday.  What a great time, I met a bunch of new shooting enthusiasts who were great company, the scenery is fantastic and the shooting was fast and exciting.  I live 1 mile from the castle and never knew about...

How many guns do you have?

I only shoot sporting so went from 2 down to 1 now.  My old browning was sitting in the cabinet never being used so what's the point in keeping it?  My new 725 sporter does everything I need so no plan to get anything else. One of the guys I go shooting with has 8 though!  Not really sure why.

    Trap theft

It's the same for any theft.  A number of years ago I had my motorbike stolen.  Police came and took details then said sorry but they wouldn't be doing anything about it.  They have priorities and motorcycle theft was low on the list so if I wanted it back I'd be better going out and looking for...

    Going away effing rabbits....

My instructor told me to imagine trying to shoot his little feet off! The rabbit that is, not the instructors feet.

    selling guns to a dealer

I was in the same position and needed to raise money for another hobby so I took my Browning Citori back to the same place I bought it.  This was a cheap old gun but it was in the same condition I bought it in (but probably cleaner) and the dealer bought it back for 78% of the price I  bought it...

    Storing Gun Cabinet Keys

My sister lives in Johannesburg and says nothing is safe there.  If they want it, they'll get it, so I agree with you, the only way to stop them is to make sure they don't know what there is that they want to steal.

    Misfired cartridge

Yes, the guy at the grounds simply cut it open and emptied everything in the bin.

    Misfired cartridge

Last weekend I had a misfired cartridge.  The staff at the grounds said to put it in the top barrel and try again but again it didn't discharge so he said take it up to the club house where someone would dispose of it, rather than chuck it in the empty cart bin.  While I was walking up to the...

    double hit

I did this once on a sim pair of incomers.  Normally they don't cross but on this day the way the wind was blowing it was catching the higher one more than the lower one and making them cross.  This wasn't in a comp and we weren't keeping score but it does feel pretty nice when you do it.

Hull Comp X 21 gram fibre

I'd only every shot 28g plastic wad until two weeks ago when I needed fibre wad for the comp and the shop only had 21g carts.  I agree that the only reason for my misses was the gun was pointing in the wrong direction but I have to say I was slightly put off by the different feel.  I'm sure I...

    First Comp

I thoroughly enjoyed the shoot and the refs and button pushers were friendly and encouraging.  However, at one stand I was told there were quite a few people who couldn't hit a single clay and were getting a bit disillusioned which did make me think they could maybe have put on one or two easier...

    First Comp

So I took the plunge at the weekend and entered my first competition.  50 bird sporting.  I shot absolutely rubbish and was getting a bit frustrated but on my second last stand I was speaking to the button pusher and he said the course was particularly hard this year, the best shot over the...

    Keyless entry...!!!

I did a similar thing with my Volvo V70.  On my way to work I stopped at a shop for a sandwich but had some other rubbish in the car so chucked it in the bin outside the shop.  Got my sandwich and went to get in the car but no key.  Damn, I thought I must've been holding it with the rubbish and...

    Storing Gun Cabinet Keys

The FEO knew my wife wasn't a certificate holder and he was speaking about my individual case.  I'm sure if she was a cert holder it would be different but it does throw up the question of say she had a certificate and had one gun on her cert, and I had a different one on mine.  If we kept them...

    Storing Gun Cabinet Keys

My FEO told me I was the only one who should have access to my guns.  I'm responsible for them and not even a friend or member of the family should have access to them.  I was speaking to the wife last night about what happens if I should die.  I said to her to phone the firearms licencing guys...
