Here is a question.

Is it possible and would it be beneficial to produce a pair of glasses that enhanced as in slightly magnified the target for shooters who do not need glasses or is near perfect vision as good as it gets ?

As I mentioned elsewhere, I went to prescription for long sight. That magnifies the world. Totally bolloxed my shooting for months, despite great clarity. Lead pictures and depth perception all to pot. Might be alright if you are only shooting them up the bum I suppose..

Having recently tried and discarded the idea of varifocal glasses (it's an age thing!) I can tell you that any form of glasses that your eyes are not fully accustomed to will screw up your scores, distort your world, and generally alter your outlook on life. You might be able to see generally, but things are not where you think they are when you come to shoot!

A magnified pair of glasses, telescopic glasses if you like (as in telescopic sight) would have to be worn permanently to get used to them I think. I have shooting glasses with an old single vision prescription (because I'm too tight to get new ones) and I wear them to a shoot so my eyes become accustomed to them. I have also shot in my current prescription glasses and they are an improvement, so keep your prescription up to date(as I will soon).

If you chop and change between prescriptions or magnifications I'm proof it leads to problems, and I'm talking about the "how did I miss that, I'm sure I was on that one" type of self doubt that creeps in.

Ok, sounds like my potential dragons den presentation is flawed then. Glasses unless you don't need them are pants by the sound of it. Anyway we will see what happens after tomorrows eye test.

OK how about a pair of binoculars fixed to the gun with gaffer tape? Should do the trick Ian!!!!

I bought a pair of driving glasses(long range) from spec savers last year just to sharpen things up at distance , they are also tinted and realy help me pick up the target clearer earlier, especialy against green, trees etc. I do have to wear glasses for reading and close work so my eye's are far from perfect,(old and tired)

Aha so it has been tried, I expect the driving glasses to which you refer are a very slight mag, interesting.

Ps - I have no intention of going down this route I was just interested in the feesability.

Have worn Beer gogles many times and we all know how amazing they can be :keeporder:  have woken up many a morning in a strange bed without them and had to make a quick exit. :fie:

Is that the bit where you chew your own arm off to get free

Yes I have had a pair of those shaun :)
Ha! thought you might :spiteful:    have  you ever tried to find them in the morning or like me did you master the art of the silent tiptoe out door at five in the morning

Ha :) Yes done that shaun in a very expensive hotel room incl a bottle of champagne was a very expensive 4 hrs. But I am sure you have had same by the sounds of it.

worst I had was being greeeted by my name by the receptionist before I even got to the desk with a different young lady at a different hotel I regularly frequented. "Good morning mr s your usual room sir" .... ouch.

It would really depend on the extent of the magnification.  If you have a prescription to correct your vision as best as the doc can do, and then add 1/4 diopter you will never "see" it but it will def beef up the distance vision.  Not sure how that might work in conjunction with astigmatism but it could be worth a try.

The real question is whether or not you will benefit from it.  I know it was a popular ATA guy thing for a while and may still be for all I know now.  I tried it and was less than overwhelmed so when I got new lenses I didn't bother.  BUT that decision was based as much on a realization that I was not Mr. Wonderful with or w/out the vision boost as anything else.

You may love it but you won't know till you try.

So its been done then, it kind of sounds beneficial BUT I spose it could effect your perception of distance etc.

No, not with just 1/4 diopter.  (I'd guess that a regular optometrist would be pretty happy to get folks within 1/4 diopter of their real needs peering thru the machine.)   Prolly even get by with 1/2 and not notice.  The doc has build-able glasses and can put together anything for you to look thru and evaluate in real time w/out having to buy several sets of lenses.  Not actually shooting of course but certainly let you see what the diff powers look like.

HaHa! absolutely brilliant Ian could just picture that

OK bear with me.

I drive artics to help feed my shotgun and had been feeling tired with aching eyes towards the end of shifts, had my latest eye check recently and the optician reckoned I'd just reached the point where I needed glasses for driving so I ordered a pair (very mild prescription) and am much less fatigued towards the end of my shifts.

Now the relevant bit, I had a lesson last week and as there was virtually no chance of being hit by a stray piece of clay or wadding I wore my driving glasses, the difference was little short of astounding as I was picking up the clay, crystal clear, as it left the trap. Up until recently I still reckoned I had 20/20 at distance and my problem was short reading distances. My problem now is what to do, do I get a set of shooting glasses or the cheaper option of 2 or 3 pairs of 'driving' glasses with different tints.

Totally same scenario for me, finding that my long sight got to the point where I now have a distance prescription. (I wear them all day and put on stronger glasses to read etc.).
Get yourself some distance prescription glasses, in a biggish size frame (important for shooting, or you will be looking at the frame top with face on the gun). Get them react to light, so they darken in bright light. Or leave them clear and get a pair of prescription sunglasses. Specsavers two for one deal will take the sting out of it. Previously I had all the pilla coloured lenses. I think the whole colour thing is 90% marketing..

This will be perfect for driving and shooting!
