Ladbrook & Langton Gunsmiths

We are recruiting !

Are you looking for an apprenticeship with a difference?

Ladbrook & Langton Gunsmiths has been established since 1988 and 2 years ago we moved into new premises. We're now looking for an apprentice who wants to learn about all aspects of gunsmithing over a 5-year training programme.

You may have studied mechanical engineering at college, you might just be fascinated with "how things work" and how to fix things when they go wrong or you could be a keen shot who has always wanted to work with shotguns but didn't know where to start with such a niche profession.

You must be able to deal effectively with customers both face-to-face and over the telephone, and have basic computer skills.

Do you have the desire to learn and be part of our tight-knit team?

Are you......
- Enthusiastic
- A team player
- Practical
- Reliable
- Keen
- A Self-starter

If so, we want to hear from you, so please drop us a line along with your CV

Deadline for applications 16th June

if I was 17 again I would jump at it.

careers adviser at my school 1978 asked what job I would like to do when I leave school (1980) I reply "a gunsmith sir" he actually laughed in my face and said words to the effect of "your a stupid boy". Very encouraging in those days ...not.

good luck to whoever gets such a brilliant opportunity ?

Shame that are 4 hours away, I probably would have applied

*you're....

Careers advisers do seem to have a habit of putting people down. Mind you, how many of them told their careers adviser that they wanted to be a careers adviser? My guess is that most failed in their pursuit of their chosen profession and as a result have a chip on their shoulders...

After filling out a questionnaire they told me I'd be best suited to being a travel agent or a farmer.   Couldn't make it up.

got another...

few years later I spent 12 month on the dole. Saw some bloke in job centre he says "what job you looking for" as I had been helping my dad do gas installations since I was a nipper and considering what trades would be most available I reply "was thinking of plumbing" the suit says "do you bight your fingernails" without time to think wtf I just replied "er yes sometimes I spose" the suit says "you cant be a plumber then as copper and lead are toxic, think of something else"

I swear to anything you like the above is word for word.....unbelievable.

for the record I have been in business since I was 21 (in 85) and my second business started in 88 (to date) is specialist service engineering including gas, plumbing, elec ...kiss my proverbial you career advising pillocks ?

Walt Disney was fired for lacking imagination and not having any ideas.....

When l was leaving school at 15 the "careers officer" ask me what l wanted to do, l said a diamond cutter or a gunsmith, he said, "you don't mind getting your hand dirty then, how about a mechanic!"

Whilst it's supremley admirable to see oppertunities like this advertised,

I suspect the amount of applicants will be in single figures  due to a couple or reasons

1) I'ts a niche market so to speak, so unless you move in shooting or game/ farming related circles  then its exposure is limited

2) Wages and PFU   i'm guessing the wage during the apprenticeship will be low and once the 5 years are up  i would hazard a guess it will pay in the 14K-18k bracket

Contrast that to an appretice in a large manufacturing industry, these days they would  be on that for the start of the apprenticeship. moving to 25K+ once qualified.

PFU from there can take that into the 30K+ and beyond areas .

Of course, someone could well be following their dream.

The upside of an apprenticeship is once you have paid your pound of flesh, you can go out on your own.  These guys are top notch - you would be learning from one if the best.
