3 weeks ago involved in a little accident which meant I dislocated & broke my right shoulder.

Have been told today that its healing well and no pins are required, BUT I shouldn't shoot for the rest of this year....

Does anybody have and personal experience of this injury or friends that have, just seems over the top I feel no shooting 8 months.

Thanks,

Chris R

Shoulder or collar bone?

I broke mine in '84 on the way to a shoot, no pins, was shooting again in about six months as it took that long for the rest of the injuries to heal, used an auto for 3 weeks till fell out with it, then back to an O/U...

Can you clarify what was dislocated and fractured? Sorry but the 'shoulder' could be interpreted in different ways.... Who told you that you couldn't shoot? If it was an orthopaedic surgeon and/or Physio, I would take their advice. If it was a GP, then I would seek the advice of an orthopaedic surgeon and/or a Physio....

personally, I wouldn't rush it. Complicated joint and rushing back could cause the healing process to lengthen and possibly create more problems in the future.... Are you having any Physio?

I dislocated and broke the knobbly bit at the top some 20 years ago through a skiing accident. Spent 7 weeks with that arm in a straight jack affair. When taken off could not move the arm. Movement eventually came back with physio etc by which time the specialist said I could shoot again when I felt like it. Have shot at least once a week thereafter will no ill effects - thank God!

Word of caution..... Everyone will have their own story/advice BUT comparisons are not generally helpful... Like I said, speak with the people I have suggested or if you have done that, take on what they have said.

knobbly bit. !!

is that a medical term ;)

I would be inclined to listen to Nick, but read about the saga of my right shoulder titled "pain in the neck" in the same section as this. I have been a total of 12 months, which included pre and post op time. I did a 100 birder at the start of the month and I am still suffering a bit. I will be sticking with the auto and 50 birds for a bit longer.

I have been told the following :

My shoulder dislocated backwards but the shoulder break is on the front.

I went head first into a steel bulkhead of a blackcab due to not wearing a seat belt, and the radiographer told me it was an unusual break as they are normally caused by either front or rear impact.

The consultant has told me it will be next year although he did say that he has no real knowledge of shotgun recoil. Have an appointment with physio next Thurs to see what they say. If it is a 8 month rest then so be it, just initially seemed to be a tad OTT.

Well I had full P.E.T. Scan on shoulder last Friday and they are happy that it is not going to need pinning / stapling.

Start my physio treatment tomorrow ( Thurs ) and then just se how things go and what they say about when/if I will be shooting again.

good news re the pinning hope you have a speedy recovery.

Do not rush it.

many a problem shoulder that was not allowed to heal and properly rehabilitate.

As Nick  said er on the side of caution.
