Hi all,

my daughter is about 5' tall and 13, my wife is 5'2" and both are looking to start shooting. Probably skeet (maybe some sporting) fundamentally I am 6'2" and have two guns, a 32" DT10 and a krieghoff k80 with 30" and 28" barrels. I want to get a gun that I can cut down so the LOP will be more suited to them and was considering a 20g but decent second hand ones are rare here in Australia so was considering either a 26" or 28" 12g sporter.

what are your thoughts?

What she said. I'm about 5'3 and also shoot a DT10. LOP reduced to 13.5" and 28" barrels. No problem with 28g cartridges, but no harm starting with lighter ones.

Don't know if CG are available in Aus but the Syren is worth considering. Just a shame it's so ugly.

Me as well,  5ft nothing on a good day.  Beretta SP1, 28 inch barrels, LOP reduced to 13 and a bit (can't remember the bit).  I use 28g cartridges now but was using 24g and would absolutely say start with 21g for them.

thanks for the replies, i'm thinking a 28" multi choke beretta (probably a SP1 Sian) then take it from there. is the adjustable stock worth it (or even possible) if I shorten the LOP to 13"?

Funnily enough I am in the near future having an adjustable stock conversion as I need a little extra height and it is possible.  Just got to part with my gun for a few weeks and I am finding that very difficult to do!

I was thinking about buying it with the beretta adjustable. Know how you feel though, had to have my krieghoff stock refinished a while ago and it took ages, ended up buying a DT10 in the meantime to fill the void

excellent advice from the ladies.

just goes to show we have everything covered at shootclay.

Start with a Hatson Escort Junior 20  bore, 21 or 24 gram loads, once they get used to shooting then move on to something different if they feel the need to change. Ideal for skeet or sporting, it's not about height it' s more about build and strength. The Hatsun is fully adjustable, low recoil and handles well. The ability to shoot a o\u without struggling will only come with practice. Much better to start off with something manageable than struggle with a more traditional clay gun too soon.

I didn't struggle at all and my upper body strength wasn't all that.  It takes a short while to get used to holding the gun because you are not used to it but each to their own.

So far the recommendation for what gun to start off with for a woman:

20 bore                         1 male

12 bore                          3 females

my wife is 5ft tall, shoots a SP1 with 28 gram cartridges, she has never had a problem. Dont go the 20 bore route.

I wish I hadn't wasted two years on a 20 bore....think how good I'd be by now if I'd gone straight to a 12...

Plus cartridges cheaper....

And adjustable stock a good idea most women benefit from one

semi auto is a no no in Australia I'm afraid unless you have a medical condition.

yes the gun laws here are ridiculous! You can buy a barret m107, but not a 20 bore three shot semi!

Adjustable stock SP1 ordered and taking her on Saturday for fitting to get LOP locked in so Beretta can cut it down when fitting the adjustable stock. So it should fit her nicely.

thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.
