What with all the fuss over emerging reports that suggest wide scale drug abuse in the athletics world, my dear wife and I were idly wondering if drug abuse had ever reared its ugly head in clay shooting. For the life of me I couldn't imagine that any substance could possibly enhance one's shooting performance, surely it would only degrade it?

Anyone?

Come to think of it, is someone going to suggest that my beloved sausage or bacon bap is in some way illegal?

If sodium nitrate and caffeine are on the banned substance list, many shooters are in a lot of trouble.

I for one would advocate a wide variety of performance enhancing drugs suitable for shooting.  Hopefully there would be one that would get me up to maybe something like mid-mediocre.

In the real world I've heard that there are some tranq things that have seen some use but I can't see that being a general use.  The others that I know of for other sports all seem at the why bother level.  But I would be happy to become informed   ;)

what about my ramipril  and aspirin  and every 8 - 10 weeks blood letting  to try and control  my polythaesemia     ( could explain why im so useless at shooting )

There were rumours about one shooter several years ago although it was nothing more than that. I have only once seen testers at an event. I believe four shooters were selected 'at random', one from each category.

I have however seen alcohol testing on more than one occasion over the years.

I did once try Viagra, I did find that I had prolonged stamina and I did feel that I was shooting straighter, but it may have just been all in my mind !

Lifte

beta blockers for snooker , not shooting ,
Ironically not Billiards .

However a nuimber of sports speciffically ban beta blockers in and out of competiion   Shooting & Archery being two notable ones

If you want to know what you can and can't do, you should visit the following

http://www.usada.org/substances/prohibited-list/athlete-guide/

http://www.globaldro.com/

Once you start to move to the upper levels of a sport where testing becomes mandatory,

you would be surprised what over the counter general medication becomes restricted.

My original post was more in fun than anything serious, but once someone mentioned beta blockers I started looking at the list of banned substances. I hadn't got far down that alphabetic list when I realised that my blood pressure medication (Amlodipine) is actually on the list. In those circumstance what does one do?

My level in competition is best described as "tentative beginner" but I don't want to either give up or to contravene any rules. I realise that down at my local shooting school it's highly unlikely that anyone would challenge me but what exactly is the score here?

I hardly dare look at the rest of the "banned substances" list, I dread to think how many of the myriad tablets I take each day are verboten.

can you be randomly tested during a GB OT selection shoot ?

I have seen them testing at the British GP before now, its usually after the event and its at random....

They get upset if you ask them to hold the piddle pot...

Was that, before, during or after the shoot? Is there a required minimum level of percentage proof? Will any booze do? I usually rely on a skin-full of lager the night before, four coffees before the shoot and about six fags.  :D  Oh and not forgetting the Ramipril

I think at club level it wouldn't be an issue , but as you move up the echelons it most definatly is...

read up on the two sites i linked it may be covered... alterantivly it may be your GP needs to perscibe some alternative drugs

It was before. I'm not sure of the limit as I wasn't tested but i'd imagine, as it was in the UK, it would be 35ug%, the drink drive limit.
