Well winter is beginning to set in down here and we are seeing days when the conditions over head are quite cloudy. My question is there any point to shooting practice rounds in bad light? I love my days shooting but it is a long round trip to the shooting ground and wonder if it is really worth while. On the one hand you cannot perform at your best on the other you are out of the house with friends enjoying yourself and possibly preparing for a day when in competition the weather is bad. What is the opinion of other tarpies?

You could get bad light and bad weather in any competition during the competition season....

Hell yes practice.

I have had fog in Italy, torrential rain in Spain and serious gales in France. The competition still goes on with or without you.

I hear they shot in sand storm at NAS last year for part of it......so be prepared with all your mental tools in the box so that it does not shock you when it happens.

My take......for what it is worth.

Just sneaking out for a little 'special practice'...............now

Rain and cloudy dark.... and i must be mad....but needs must...

Didn't realise bad light only affected tarpies
It doesn't Sian, you are quite right, it affects us all when it happens....whether Trap, Skeet of Sporting type shooting....but John posted this under the Trap section to get answers from those who shoot Trap because this is what he is interested in.

Shoot it, as Nicola says its practice for when you get bad light during a comp BUT do not expect your usual score.

Yes Sian you are right it does affect all shooters but Nic as Nic has said I only shoot trap so thought I would ask on the trap section. I don't know about other tarpies but personally I don't shoot practice when it is raining normally, I have been out shooting when the rain came on though but being covered its no great inconvenience. Funny being able to see the shot going through the rain and the water being thrown off the target.

John, get yourself over here, to Southern Counties in fact.....you can get every type of weather known to man in just an hour!!! :spiteful:

Choosing the weather and conditions you are happy to shoot in as absolutely fine if your not competitive however if you are then throughout the season you can expect to shoot in all manner of conditions and light that you would not choose to shoot in given a chance. This can be fog so bad you cant see the target (ask top dog about ABT shoot at SC in april) or rain so bad you cant see through your glasses etc etc etc

There is no doubt that the shooting conditions down here favour the trap shooter. During the summer this year I don't think I actually had anything other than good conditions to shoot in... that said perhaps some British trap shooter may find the high temperatures a problem. I am not too affected by it but some days you are standing in a tee shirt that is just soaked through with perspiration and should you get sweat running into your eyes just a you are about to shoot... that is a miss!

You poor poor man, it sounds absolutely terrible down there matey.

French weather, French food, French wine, French women, trap clubs all over the place. I do not know how you cope with it all :)

Take no notice of him Ian. He's just trying to wind us lot up, he knows we get worse weather in the summer than he gets in the winter. Flippin ex pats!!!!

Les to be absolutely honest with you this autumn has been a belter and even today though showery it is still high teens, however when it rains down here you would be surprised its like monsoon conditions. I am Scottish and we do get a bit of rain but it never falls quite like it does here. Fortunately it does not rain quite so frequently down here but annually we get more rain than any other region of France and more than in Edinburgh!

This is what happens when a Dorset trap shooter has a go at being a hedge monkey in typical British weather! The person in question is Ianinpoole, picture probably taken by Garry2749, who always seems to have a bloody camera with him!!!

That looks fun ............. NOT.
Garry2749 always leads everyone astray if he can get away with it! Then when you least expect it he produces a bloody camera and shoves the pictures all over the net!!! The day before that picture was taken, Garry was using a three shot BLUE auto for DTL practice, and yes he was using three shells in it too!  :fie:

When you see a photograph like that it makes you realise how civilised trap shooting is! I would not knock the sporting shooters though you have to be keen to want to venture out into that and call it enjoyment :) I think it would e fair to say the sporting shooter is perhaps more enthusiastic in the pursuit of their game!

They seem to enjoy being knee deep in mud and crap from what I've seen of it. It's not for me, but each to his own as they say!
