Hello,

I am Peter from North West Kent. I haven't shot since I was in my late teens when I used to work at a clay shoot in Derbyshire and shot when I could afford it. I surrendered SGC and FAC when I went to Uni and now many years later am just starting to take up shooting again. I will be shooting in the Dartford/Maidstone/Sevenoaks area and am just in the process of applying for a SGC. Hopefully I will be looking to purchase a gun shortly after.

Welcome, I too am a returning shooter, you will notice a few changes the birds are better due to auto traps! Enjoy.

I suspect that they are all MUCH smaller and faster than I remember!

I think a novice lesson or two is in order as it's been close to 30 years since I picked up a shotgun and I need to get myself sorted out as to which way round to shoot. Being (strongly) left handed and (slightly) right eyed I was never sure if I would have been better trying to learn to mount on the right, or to mount where it feels natural on the left and train my brain to be left eye dominant!

I'm a lefty and right eyed, been shooting for almost three years. I was advised by many to close one eye, stick luminous bits on the end of the gun, stick patches on glasses, vasoline and all sorts. Then just swapped shoulders and hey presto! Occassionally it feels a bit weird but only when I think about it and try shooting gun up. I shoot gun down and OSK so it can be done!

You can't physically change / choose your dominant eye but you CAN train to shoot with the left one as you suggest  :)  . I have done the reverse for ever and keep both eyes open.

Eye dominance isn't as fixed as you might think - it can vary with age, fatigue and light conditions, particularly if its not a very strong dominance in the first place. Mine is only a slight bias to the right and in the past used to be left, so a bit of training should help me at least use the left eye if not strictly change dominance.

I shoot air rifle now and then for pest control (left handed) so I think that shooting clays right handed is probably a step too far - it just feels wholly unnatural to mount the gun on that side. Too much like when junior school tried to force me to write right handed!

Welcome to the forum.

If you start shooting at Robin Hood or Abbey, SkeetUK and myself are there on a regular basis as are a couple of other members of the forum.

Excellent - thanks! I will bear that in mind once I have got organised with a gun. Good to know there are so many shoots around this neck of the woods.
