After 10 months of shooting skeet I got a bit bored and decided to try DTL & ABT. So, the last 6 weeks I have been watching my scores steadily climb from about 17 up to an average of 22. Until now! On Saturday I bought a Beretta 686 E sporter which also came with trap woodwork including monte carlo stocks. I was nervous about killing my average on Sunday with it but thought hey-ho, nothing ventured nothing gained and wow. The gun feels superb and my first round I scored 24/25 with two straights to follow. To say I am chuffed is an understatement. Now I feel more confident and I can perhaps look forward to taking part in some registered comps. I was conderned that the gun may be a little light but that fear has now gone and I can get on and enjoy using it.

Well done, nothing wrong with 686 i have done 100 straights with one.

Fyi you can get gmk to fit a 682 adjustable trigger to it for about 150 quid should you ever feel the need.

Ps

were do you shoot ?

Good going - keep at it :)

I returned to Clay Shhoting after a long break earlier this year. I started shooting DTL in April so far I've made the Lincolnshire DTL team, shot the Dougal, British, English & European Chamionships - thoroughly enjoyed them all (apart from the weather). My goal is to make the England Team selection shoots for next year if I get any further it'll be a dream come true.

I shot my 1st 100 ABT yesterday - not a big score but I enjoyed the day & learnt a lot from it - I'm going to shoot it more through the winter with a goal to make the Linc's ABT team next year.

Thanks. I shoot in Gloucestershire and have been very guilty of mainly shooting at one small club but I do venture to Ian Coley's & one or two others from time to time.

Well of you fancy a trip out, a few us old Dorset boys are shooting abroad this Saturday......we are going to Axminster.....in DEVON!!!  I've only shot a little bit of DTL in the last twenty years, mainly I've been on the fast stuff, but I reckon I'm getting too old for it now, so maybe it's time for changing back to DTL. If you fancy a trip, just let me know.

If you want to progress you absolutely must shoot as many grounds as possible to gain experience of different back grounds lighting and traps.

Yes indeed.......and also the non reg targets, mics that don't work when they should, traps that don't throw left, and  toilets that the rats won't even enter without a minder!!!!

Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I have arranged to meet some mates at my local ground this Sunday but would definitely be up for it another time.

I am planning on trying as many grounds as possible over the next year.

On a slight aside, I have heard that although many grounds are fibre only - that they relax the rules fro trap shooting and allow plastic wad. Anyone any experience of this? I have been advised that plastic is better for trap due to the shot string.

I have never been to a trap ground that insists on fibre wads, most trap shooters won't use the things any way!

What les said. No proper trap ground will be fibre and as les states we wouldnt shoot fibre anyway.

Absolutely les :)

Flaming horrible dirty smelly things them fibre jobs.

I did try a couple of boxes of Eley's I think they were, donkeys years back it was. Tried them at ball trap at West London, when I checked the barrels afterwards they were full of rubbish, black sooty bits that seemed like burnt bits of paper!!!! Never shot any fibres since then!

There the beggers I shot the other week, Phils hasn't spoken to me since I gave him a box to try :)

I think it was back in the 80's, Eley made a trap shell that had a black paper case and deep brass with gold lettering on the case. I think they did them in 28 and 32. Not cheap but a really smooth shooting shell, they stopped making them just after I tried them.
