Thinking of getting a trap for when my freetime doesn't coincide with days/times that ranges are available. Looking for ideas as to what readily portable trap I should be looking at, thinking along the lines of a random direction/elevation one but that can be locked down to throw a specific trajectory if I want to work on something particular.

Have a look at the promatic harrier ABT wobble trap. I think you can use that as a random or fixed trap, and it's a great size for personal or small club use.

Only one name, Laporte, will do everything you require and will throw clays consistently for years on end, with very little maintenance

Local shooting ground uses both Promatic and Laportes. They seem to have less trouble from the Promatics. When I was connected with a Shooting ground, we had all Promatics and we were well pleased, including their after sales service, which was superb. (when rarely required)

What's wrong with Bowman?

I was at a new ground today that had just kitted themselves out with Bowman traps.  They seem well engineered and reliable.

If you hang on until October/ November, Promatic sometimes have deals on the traps that have spent the Summer on the clay circuit. They all have been overhauled and have a warranty. Could be worth a phone call.

I really recommend Bowman too.  I suggested the harrier as it fits the bill for the best cost. As a small shoot that only buys the occasional trap Bowmans customer service is second to none.  I have a promatic osprey and when it was initially delivered with a fault we could not get any help at all.

I have a Bowman supermatch one which after a lot of service has been reconditioned by Bowman to work like new.  I recently bought a supermatch 6 off of them too and in 3 shoots have not had a no bird off of it.  You get to know the guys at Bowman on first name terms and they go out of their way to help.

My next trap, after my fund raising shoot (hint hint everybody please come and shoot) will be Bowmans Rabbit/chondel

Having tried several types of auto trap over the years I would recommend Promatic hands down, nice simple uncomplicated design and very very reliable

Are most traps pretty reliable? For somebody using them relentlessly at a clay ground, only the best will do, but is it the case that a "lesser brand" trap throwing 1-2000 clays per year in private use will go on forever at that rate? No idea. Genuine question.

Promatic sell good kit but its expensive. John Bidwell makes traps and we used a good number of them. The company is easy to deal with, spares are readily available and their prices are very reasonable when compared to other traps on the market. We found them very easy to work on and at least as reliable as the Promatics. We didn't use them any differently to the other traps we had and I can only recommend them as good, reliable traps.

I have used all the popular makes and have to say that Promatic have worked very hard to try and get the Lion's share of the market.

Without doubt their Super Sporter is an exceptional trap  for robustness, and reliability.

BUT I have Laporte's and Bidwell's  that have never given a minutes trouble.

Bowman are good but did have a stupid design flaw with the early ones, easily solved with a drill and a grease nipple. But all of them really are value for money.

If I had to buy a new trap now I would go for Laporte, because with their deal on a pallet of clays with a new trap by the time you have retailed the clays you get the trap practically free of charge.

If I was a small club or an individual just starting I would certainly talk to all of the manufacturers to find the best deal.

After reading this thread, one word comes to mind PROMATIC..........

Do you want a cheap trap or trap that is cheap to own ???........think about it !!!

Buy once & buy right !!!

Free pallets of clays are just a carrot being dangled in front of a donkey in my opinion......

My Promatic Osprey came with 2 free pallets of clays.  It was 2 or 3 years ago.  As Salopian said, that made the trap very very cheap.

Yes, i also took advantage of that deal & purchased 3 of them.......

Promatic dont need to do this anymore, as we all know they are the market leaders :nyam:

Everyone wants to drink champagne for lemonade prices but in reality nothing is for nothing & you only get what you pay for !!!
