Sporting Shoots; where- and how was it? (2018)

Well shot. My worst stands were 5 and 6. Hit the first pair on 5 then didn't connect with the teal again. I'd normally take a teal like that on the way up, but the movement from the first bird didn't lend itself to that and I'm pretty sure I shot under them at the top. Stand 6 missed the first pair due to poor hold on the first bird and then shot over the top of another of the going away pink things. Also managed to randomly drop a pair on the sim on stand 3. Other than that it was one or two away on most of the others.

Four counties and Gatton Bottom for us today. Was going well at Four Counties shot in order missing 6 on my first 7 stands, 3 on stand 6 alone which was 5 pairs but they were a nasty pair, edgy. Stand 8 missed 4 floppy sim pair up in the trees and kept losing the second one in the tree line, stand 9 missed 1, stand 10 missed 4 but two teal, one black and the orange further away on report, up through the greenery to emerge in cloud - got one of the orange but this will always get me. Stand 11 down by pool shoot high crossing midi and closer left to right missed 1. I was happy with 84 and doing well on most stands especially as 6 were 5 pairs. Then to Horne where I finished on 80 but just sloppy on some. Missed 1 on stand 1, 3 on stand 3, the last pair on stand 4 up the stairs, stand 5 hit the first 4 missed 3 and got the last one! Stand 6 and 7 missed the second bird on first two pairs, stand 9 missed the first and last bird and a pair in the middle and then stand 12 that blinking rabbit missed 3. I think I just need to concentrate a bit more sometimes, light was not to my liking at Horne, dull greedy/grey. Bonus journey home was quick for once on M25.

73 at GB, first reg since March after house purchase. Predictably dropped silly things but happy enough after the long break. Look to build on it next weekend and I’m back with RF on 30th.

Practice round at Willow Farm yesterday and I tried to implement a pre-shot routine to help me be more consistent and stop myself overthinking things between pairs. Seemed to work well so I tried it again this morning at Gatton Bottom. Had a little wobble in the middle and kept slowing up on teals (let 5 of those get away over two stands), but otherwise shot it well, finishing on 79.

Any hearing protection should have a protection rating, the higher the figure the better the protection, check out the figures from the manufacturers and see what performs best on paper. For reference the single number rating for a few random products: msa electronic muffs state 25db, cens electronic 31db, yellow foam plugs or such like are anything from 28 to 35db of protection depending on shape and manufacturer.

Just a point for in-ear plugs... ears never stop changing shape and/or growing so if you get custom fit ones, they'll only ever last a few years before the inner shape has changed in one or another. I like them though. 😊

Another vote for the MSA's from me. Had mine for ages, never hit my stock against them.

I bought some custom in-ear plugs a year ago and don’t get on with them. I have gone back to my basic muffs. i might check out the muffs recommended above - they sound excellent.

Ive always believed the opposite, because the area around the ear also absorbs sound, particularly the bone behind the ear. Plus muffs keep your ears warm, which is good about 8 months a year in UK.

I did watch a YouTube video that plugs have a better rating and protection level than muffs.. is this really the case? Really like the ones on starkeys site Jamie

got to agree with the sweaty ears but i think its a small price to pay for the extra sound deadening. i used in ear custom plugs for years and thought they were great until i forgot them and had to borrow a pair of muffs. the difference was amazing.

Earmuffs - sweaty in the summer. In Ear - nice in the summer, but can suffer from wind noise (passive type) Each to there own, but in ear for me.

And ear muffs are so much quieter than any in ear plugs.

What Will said, MSA cans , try the Supreme Pro X model with Gel Ear-cups as well . You can wear them in a downpour and they still work . The sound quality is amazing , and a single AAA battery lasts for months . Turn them off if you want isolation , turn them up if you want to hear a trap spring , or a pheasant’s wingbeats . At 1/3 the price of a quality set of in ear electronics they are a bargain . Starkey Headsets offer a 14 day no questions return so you could try without any risk . I picked up a pair after reading comments on here from prolific shooters who use them , everyone who has tried them wants a pair.

Before you write off ear muffs.. consider MSA sordin. Light pressure, good shape, don’t hit stock (especially if you wear them the right way around as they have a recess for the controls). I can’t wear any other headphones.

Good Evening all, Currently own a set of debens muffs but these ache my ears after a while, also end up with the gun stock catching them sometimes which results in my skin getting pinched.. So now is the time to look into a set of electronic plugs that will protect my ears well and prevent my tinnitus getting any worse! So which makes do people recommended and how do i go about doing a mold? Also what price am i looking at for a set? Cheers Jamie

Ditto, nightmare, emotional, flummoxed by my ineptitude on a good course. Just one of those days.

Also Owls, continuing not to shine. A good course I thought. Dropped various silly ones. Hit my average by shooting fairly well on some harder ones. Nothing to report here. Move along..

Owls for 3pm start did threaten to get windy / chilly, odd breeze in end nowt horrid, stayed warm enough for polo shirt & shooting vest. Our merry band started on st5 dropped 4 😐 straighted st9 only to blank St10 a long l-r & long r-l set up badly and didnt change a thing 🤡 another wobble on St12 ☹️ One was in danger of carding a squadron or many squadrons of a wartime aircraft 🙃 Hardly made an error on last stands to end with a 7+ which was all 😊 Merry gang all shot very well, it was a good day on the clay. Left before scores all in

Benelli 828U Sport - tried one

Have been on the lookout for one since shooting that demo gun in early march, the challenge being either 'ambitious pricing' or a piece of timber that may have had a past life in a pallet. However the stars lined up today - found one with a nice piece of dark, nicely grained wood and at the right money - 220 mile round trip to go and buy it. Shall have a tinker with it later... 5 hours later...have tinkered, out of the box it seems to be sent up for a kind of average right handed shooter (gun comes with a bunch of shims so one can alter the stock geometry and also the balance by adding or subtracting stock weights. There is an IC choke in the bottom barrel and an M in the top. The demo gun I tried was very tight, physically hard to open and felt like a little lube judiciously applied would have helped things - and indeed this one is the same. Lube has helped.. It does seem exquisitely well made, proper precision engineering. Going to shoot the gun 'as is' tomorrow and see how it works in practice.

    Varifocal or fixed?

Single vision seems to be the most common on this side of the pond. I sort of learned to "peer underneath" my shooting glasses to mark the scorecard.
